November 03, 2005Protests
A few weeks ago, my Interpreter dropped me off at the train station (it was raining), and on the way out the gate, we saw these folks protesting. I think they were protesting the general presence of the US in Japan, and it's a fairly regular occurance. Most times, people just stand outside and chant. Someone has a bullhorn, and they do some repetetive cheers, much like the uninspired blather that the anti-war/Anti-America idiots...you know, "Bush Lied, People Died"...that sort of blather. Japanese protesters are for the most part much more polite, though. And better dressed. No hairy, dope smoking, birkenstock wearing, tree hugging, pinko commie hippie types. I think these folks may have been from the Japanese Nationalist party, though. They're the ones who want to restore the Emporer to his former godlike status, and want us out. In any case, it was interesting to see...

The protest reminds of the time in 1969 or 1970 when I was stationed at the Yokosuka Microwave Communications site (They just demolished the tower I heard). I was on watch on top of the hill when I heard a roar of some kind. After going outside the building I was amazed and a little scared to see what appeared to be thousands of Japanese protestors with helmets chanting "Yankee bomp bomp Go Home bomp bomp" over and over again. The thought occured to me that there was nothing we could do if they decided to over run the main gate. Steve Posted by: Steve on November 18, 2005 10:05 AMPost a comment
