January 28, 2005Groundhog Day
Why Groundhog Day as a title? Well, I've discovered in my short time here on the Kitty City, that the longer I'm at sea, the more things are the same, day to day. We've been out at sea only 3 days and for some odd reason, fatigue and short tempers seem to rule the day/night. We're currently doing Carrier Quals or CQ for short, an evolution that is critical for the airwing embarked on our ship. The Battle Kat is here to support the airwing, but boy, you can cut the resentment from some ship personnel with a knife! I on the other hand, enjoy the differences between the two groups. It makes for an interesting group of people in the wardroom during meals, which right now, is the only daily social activity I partake in on a regular basis. Basically, I have learned to sleep less, work longer hours, and enjoy the peace and quiet of closing my office door at the end of the day. Sleep is precious, yes, and necessary for a healthy lifestyle but on the Battle Kat, it's rare. I find that I can sleep virtually anywhere. When I injured my back a couple of weeks ago, the morning of Fast cruise (we pretend we're at sea for a couple of days and practice different evolutions prior to going to Sea Trials), I ended up sleeping nearly upright in my office chair with my feet propped up for a few days. Now, if for some reason, I'm still in my office late at night and into the morning, rather than head up to the stateroom, I will just sleep in my office for a couple of hours and then head up when I would normally start getting ready for work. Strange I know but sometimes it just feels more efficient. Hopefully when I'm done with this tour, I'll be able to sleep normally once again. Comments
