City of Carnivores

Well, 2 carnivores anyway. Yes, yes, we know that eating meat in India is poo-poo'ed. Vegetarian, vegetarian, vegetarian. If meat, then expect lots of toilet.

Telling that to me and Claudia though... well, look, we aren't Hindus. We. Like. Meat.

Yesterday afternoon we headed back to the hotel to wait out the rain, and for some reason we started flipping through the guidebook restaurant pages... and then we started talking about steaks.

Bad idea.

Having been living in on the Left Coast's crunchville of Eugene, Oregon for the past few years, my own diet is somewhat vegetarian. I eat meat, but not too often; a few times a week. Still, one look at a pepperoni pizza, or one whiff of a barbecue, and as I lick my lips I remind myself why I will always be carnivorous.

Claudia is far, far worse. She's a New-Yokkah, after all - a hard-ass chick who likes her flesh served bloody and mooing. Sitting in the hotel room, she suddenly curled up into a wee ball and cried out: "I want a steak! I want a steak!"

We knew we probably wouldn't find a steak, so instead we went for Chinese. How Hua, on Mirza Ghalib Street, is a recommended restaurant in Let's Go, and a few other guides, I believe. We gorged. On fried pork dumplings, bean curd and veg (5 a day you know), and Manchurian chicken balls. It was salty; we tore the flesh with our teeth; we mopped up rice, and we smiled, sitting back, full and happy.

We have eaten flesh in India - and our guts have not poo-poo'ed our feasting.

Now let's see... we're leaving for Bhubaneswar in a few hours, but that's plenty of time to hit a few of the dozens of kebab shops on Park Street...

Hey PC and Ant

C u guys soon, and there shall be chicken tikkas and kebabs and much more in the land of Bangalore. Pork is really a no-no in India, it is really unhygenic. Hope you are not down with delhi belly, while travelling.

Ok, now my homework is to shortlist all the restaurants in town, which we can then attack.

Have a nice trip down south. PC was glad to note that you are now smiling again.. (well 80 per cent at least)

Dusty, thanx - the tummies are both fine, but thanx for the warning against pork. Our dumplings were yummy... The next day for lunch, we went to Oasis and I had some fish punjabi. I'd been wanting to try West Bengali fish, and Claudia found this place as we were on Park st.

hey there chickie- thought of you today as i pulled on my nice and cozy black socks . . .so i thought i'd drop you a line. all's hell here as usual.... people are cranky- especially today. i've never seen so many 'adults' complain that they want candy blahblahblah . . .its halloween and mia and i DIDNT BUY ANY, oh the horror of it all! anyway, i myself am on a diet which im sure you wouldnt approve of, carb free, in fact im pretty sure you're rolling your eyes already! so . . .anyway ive got juicy gossip ....someones cooking a bun....thats it, thats all you get for now! so,I head off to fl tomorrow- thank God . . .heat!! of course it's nothing like the sites you're seeing, but its definately a break from here! so where are you now anyway? is your man still with you?by the way, i just have to point out once again--you're such a GIRL!!! lol well i've gotta run- work orders to do yeaaaahhh!! talk to you soon/later/whenever!!! ~ snoozy
