Dahab is the best

We just got back to Cairo after a week in Dahab. I must say that Dahab is the most relaxing place in Egypt!

Not much to say about it really. The last week or so consisted of nothing but eating, laying around, reading, drinking beer, laying around some more, drinking some more beer.

By Egyptian standards, Dahab is very beautiful. Most of the buildings are complete and not collapsing into rubble, there are no hazardous pits in the sidewalks, the air's clean, access to the beach is unimpeded by resort hotels and construction sites.

We had been hoping to do some hiking around St Katherine's, which is slightly inland from Dahab. Unfortunately, though, I cut my foot on a sharp rock, so couldn't do much walking for the time we were there. Since I couldn't walk, I had to just spend the week reclining on pillows at beachfront cafes, drinking beer . . .

Thanks for posting some Egypt pictures. Everything looks amazing.

What type of beer do they have in Egypt?

Happy Thanksgiving!

Yes, I have the same question as Jeremy......give us the beer info plus any wines that you might have sampled. Continue the adventure and have a very Happy Thanksgiving!

Stella is the main beer in Egypt. It's a passable light lager, more in the Asian style (e.g., Taj Mahal, Singha, or Tsingtao) rather than the American style. Usually is 10 Egyptian pounds (about a dollar and a half) for a 20 oz bottle, but one place in Dahab had 5 pound stellas. There are a couple of other beers, but Stella is the cheapest, and best.

I think the wine is all made by some government winery. It tastes a bit like propane fumes.

There's also Egyptian made liquor, but it gave me a hangover just looking at the scary bottles.
