Napier

New Zealand is on a big fault line where two tectonic plates collide, so there are a fair few earthquakes and volcanoes. The city of Napier, on the East coast of the North Island, was hit by a big earthquake in 1931 and pretty much completely destroyed. They rebuilt it in Art Deco style and many of the buildings have a 1930s look to them. It's now pushed as a big tourist attraction (as everything seems to be in New Zealand) and people visit to look at the architecture.

It was actually a really pleasant town and I spent a nice day there walking along by the ocean, climbing the hill overlooking the bay and walking around the Botanical Gardens and cemetary, and parks in the centre.
