March 02, 2005Thoughts on Mexico
I am incredibly behind in my blog updates, and many of you probably think that Silje and I are still in Mexico... The reality is that we only spent 10 days there, hurrying towards Guatemala, the country where we wanted to spend most time. However, the short time I did spend in Mexico definitely made me want to come back for more. Much more. I have later said that about every country, and almost every place, weīve visited, but Mexico was truly enchanting, for several different reasons. I have nothing but good things to say about the Mexican people I met on my trip. After hearing about corruption, rip-offs, violence, sleazyness etc, I am happy to say that I didnīt experience any of it (apart from the ass gabbing incident, that is). On the contrary, nobody tried to rip me off, I never felt unsafe, and I had the pleasure of meeting only the most helpful and smiling people. Mexican Food... mmmmm... most of you know that Iīm a huge food lover and that the first thing I do at a new place is scoop out the restaurants and food markets. Well, Mexico didnīt disappoint in the food department. I was in food heaven. Mexican food is incredibly varied, and every day brought a new surprise of delicious soups, tamales, tacos, tostadas, moles, meats in chili sauce, Mexican hot chocolate and so much more... We ate from street carts and market stalls every day, and were never bored. I wish more countries had the culture of gathering in the streets around the food cart, chatting and eating throughout the evening. In Oaxaca, I snacked on deep fried and spiced crickets, a local delicacy. They werenīt bad atually, perhaps it was the fever... The Mexican nature we saw was absolutely stunning, and we only saw a small part of the country... And the country is just full of interesting historical sites... Kathīs verdict: Iīll be back!
