January 28, 2005High times in Oaxaca
Not in the mood for great adventures after having had a cold and fever for the past few days, Silje and I decided to spend the day exploring OaxacaŽs famous markets, the artists' market being of special interest of course. First things first, we had to stash up on money, and headed next to the Mercado de Abastos, the largest in the city. And large it was, covering several city blocks and completely hiding any other tourists that may be present. Huge sections were dedicated to a certain type of goods, such as clothes, electronics, hardware, vegetables, meats, shoes and even furniture. There was even a witchcraft section complete with amulets and voodoo dolls. Feeling like death, I decided to break down and try (for the first time in my life) Dayquil, a daytime flu 'miracle medicine' hailed by most Americans I've ever met as the 9th wonder of the world. OK, slight exaggeration here but you get my point. I was looking forward to getting my head cleared up before heading to the artists' market to haggle for woven wall hangings and table cloths. All I can say is DO NOT try this for the first time when you've things to do and places to go! Dayquil, instead of relieving my aches and pains, made me high as a kite, hyper yet tired, and my brain shut completely down. In this altered state I managed to bargain my way into three pieces of gorgeous woven wall hangings to adorn my future apartment. And as I came down from my high, I found to my relief that I still loved them. Comments
Take some pics of those markets and local entres for me:-) Get well....Soon... Sounds like you're having fun. Have forwarded you several emails from my bro who travelled the area in september. I hope they don't scare you too much! Keep in touch Posted by: Susan on January 29, 2005 07:39 AMPaul, IŽll try :-) |
