Honduras & Home

We travelled from Granada , Nicaragua , via Tegucigalpa to San Pedro Sula in the north of Honduras on 15 August. We had made the decision while in Granada that it was time to go home . 9 months on the road had been fantastic but we were weary, tired of backpacks & budget accommodation, & Ady's ankle was still troubling him. So in San Pedro we booked a flight from Guatemala City to Mexico City from where we would fly back to England on the 24th August , arriving back for our daughter Gemma's 21st birthday on the 25th.

From San Pedro it was just another 3 hours to Copan Ruinas where we would spend the final week of our holiday.

Copan Ruinas is a small town about 1km from the Mayan ruins of the same name . It was the most southernly town occupied by the Mayan civilisation (400-1200AD ) whose region extended from there to Mexico. The ruins are spectacular , with pyramids , temples & intricately carved monuments. We were most impressed at the extent & the good condition of these ruins. It is estimated that at the peak of civilisation around 800AD there were 20000 inhabitants.

We spent our 2nd day horse-riding in the beautiful country in view of the mountains of Guatemala & our 3rd day at some hot springs near the town . The water comes out of the ground at 85degrees C & obviously you can't bathe in it until it merges with the cold river water.

Our 4th day was spent at the excellent Macaw Mountain bird park. Beautiful !

And our last day was spent sitting outside our room with magnificent views , contemplating where we had been , all that we had done & what we would do next. No answers to the last one !

On Tuesday we travelled by bus over the border & through Guatemala ( another beautiful country ) to Guatemala City (not so beautiful ) .

And here we are in Everingham ...........
