Made it to Cuenca

Hi there !

Just to let anyone who is interested know that we have arrived safely and are staying in Cuenca , Ecuador.

We had 31 hours of travel from home to our apartment here but it was trouble-free , our only slight mishap being at the bus station at Guayaquil.

Tired after 26 hours of continuous travel & loaded down with very heavy backpacks we stepped onto the 3rd of 4 flights of escalators me leading the way. The handrail was not working so as my feet ascended my top half remained still and the weight of my bags pulled me down backwards on top of Ady. We both ended up in a crumpled heap at the bottom of a still-moving escalator frantically trying to claw our way into an upright position !
It seemed like the nightmare would never end . A security guard appeared & put us out of our misery by stopping the escalator & reprimanding us for not using the stairs with all our luggage. Nothing broken , just a few bruises !

We are in Cuenca till 16 December. I am doing 5 hours a day in a Spanish language school. Have just finished my 2nd day. ( 1 to 1 tuition this first week ) My brain hurts a lot ! Its ok though .Am enjoying learning so far & Ady is quite happy reading , sleeping , & watching CNN till I get home each day!

Cuenca is Ecuador's 3rd largest city renowned for its wonderful colonial architecture. There are hundreds of churches , museums , etc , so we have lots to explore. We are going to enjoy our stay here !

Hi Folks

Glad to hear you arrived safe and sound, if a bit bruised! Mary wants to know what the weather's like? Think she might be planning a visit for Xmas!

After a good week, she has had a couple of not so good days. Headaches have returned and she is somewhat depressed. Still, hopefully the visit by her cousins' from the States will improve her state of mind.

Visit to the oncologist planned for later today..I think she is worried by that. Don't think there will be any startling revelations though.

All in all, life continues as before. I think I may have convinced her to come over to England a week from Monday...we'll see. I'm going to book the ferry anyway.

Love you

Gordon
