Toilets

I thought Italian culture was supposed to be so classy... the cafe's, the language, the amazing food and wine....
So what's up with this toilet basin-type thing that is completely sunk into the floor? There is no bowl, nothing to "sit" on, it's a freaking hole in the ground!
I am disappointed every time I go into a bathroom and see one.... sometimes they are even in nice restaurants and/or department stores. (And it's not only Italy, they have these in Croatia too). Sometimes you are blessed with a handle on the side of the wall, but sometimes you are not. The first few times I tried to use one, I left my feet way out in front of me (it is not obvious where you are supposed to put them) and had to lean my butt WAY back holding onto the one handle with both hands in a death grip. It was obvious very quickly that I was doing it wrong.
I think I'm getting a handle on it though. Feet go on either side of the hole. Handle is simply to help you up and down. Squatting is necessary and you just keep your fingers crossed that all garments are out of the way and not touching the floor at the same time. I am NOT impressed.

The accomodations with the bowl in the floor you are experiencing are eastern toilets and yes they have them in Italy because it is close to the east-west divide. Sometimes you can find them alongside western toilets. If your stuck with them, say a prayer to Allah and just enjoy.
