Medical Issues and Hajj

The next few months in KSA are dominated by religious events. Ramadan is going on now and for the next 3 weeks, followed by Eid al Fitr, the celebration at the end of Ramadan (corresponds roughly to Easter following Lent in the Christian world), and then early next year (February timeframe), the annual pilgrimage to Makkah, Hajj.

Ironically for such a closed country, after oil, tourism is the next biggest industry here in KSA. That's because millions of people make the Hajj pilgrimage every year. So many people coming in from so many different countries around the world with so many different health conditions and habits means there is great potential for medical problems.

The Arab News had a good article today about some of the measures that the Kingdom is putting in place to ensure that there isn't a spread of epidemics into the Kingdom.
