May 24, 2004Honk if you love sightseeing
Having tired of shopping, (but not our purchases) we hit the streets of Hong Kong. We walked down to the harbour and caught a ferry to Hong Kong Island, (Mongkok is in Kowloon which is attached to the Chinese mainland) we caught the Peak Tram to the top of Mount Victoria, the Highest peak on the Island. The view would have been pretty good on a clear day....... Our next sightseeing trip was to the Po Lin Monastery, home of the Big Buddha, at 26.4m high, the world's biggest outdoor, seated, bronze buddha (there are bigger ones but they aren't outdoors, seated AND bronze). But after a two hour pilgrimage we were more interested in the vegetarian restaurant within the monastery grounds. We ordered the V.I.P feast (5 courses of vegetarian bliss) and received the best meal of the trip (nay our lives). Filled with inner peace (and good food) we looked around the rest of the grounds, particularly impressive were the carved reliefs, dragons, really big incense sticks, the old gate and the view from the top. But for me it was hard to go past this sign. Feeling a little sacrilegious (thalt shall not titter like a schoolgirl) I tried to atone for my sins by bathing the idol. Feeling much better we headed home, packed a big cone and then our bags ready for our flight to Bangkok in the morning. Comments
