The next morning we flew to Hong Kong, not really knowing what to expect; this was the first of our "Connection Cities" - places that weren't on our wish-list but were needed to get somewhere else. However since we were going there we figured we'd make the most of it and have a look around. If I had to use one word to sum up Hong Kong, it would be Shopping, if I had to use two words, More Shopping. We were in Hong Kong for four days, I think we spent nearly three of those days in shops or markets. The place is a shopping mecca, it seems to be the national pastime/obsession,the shops don't open till 10 a.m but the crowds are still strong at 11 p.m. There is a whole block of shops that sell just shoes (sneaker alley) and a three storey building full of computer bits and peices, honestly you can buy anything here including (but not limited too) fish in bags and strange fluffy mammals. We were staying in Mongkok- the heart of shopping town where the locals go for bargains. But enough of the shopping and more about the food. After Japan which was difficult, Hong Kong was a breeze. It took us a while walking around before we found a place with a menu in english, but when we did it was cheap and cheerful. Especially compared to Japan where the food was very attractive (and expensive) but left you with a "wheres the rest of it?" feel. But shopping doesn't make for a good story so we decided to do a bit of sightseeing next.
