Genocide in Sri Lanka
Sure this is a travel blog, not Nilima’s personal forum to advocate about distressing humanitarian issues, but that’s what i need to do now. Please visit

to read an article by Ellyn Shander on the slaughter of Tamils in Sri Lanka. This is especially crucial now because both the Red Cross, Clinton Foundation and UN have millions of dollars earmarked for tsunami relief. Sri Lanka is the only country which needs/wants the aid, but it is not being delivered because of the violence. It it is our hope that if people remind/pressure these organizations to keep their promises, they can open channels for humanitarian relief and a halt to the violence. So here’s what you can do:
Read Ellyn’s article
Write to Clinton Foundation/UN (links provided)
Write to paper/senator/congressperson
Write to your local chapter of the American Red Cross. and do the following:
- Call and ask to speak to the President of the local Chapter of the American Red Cross. If the President is not available ask for the next responsible official present at the office.
- Tell her/him that you are calling about the Tsunami relief fund collected by Red Cross and not being utilized.
- Share your information that out of the $567million collected only $100m was spent.
- Tell them that the Tamil areas of NorthEast Sri Lanka that sustained two thirds of the damage in that island were not given any relief by the American Red Cross.
- You are opposed to the transfer of the unspent money to the General Fund of the Red Cross at the end of the 2 year (by end of this December).
- If that happens, it will be a betrayal of the intentions of the kind hearted people of America.
- Request them to hand over the unspent money (nearly $400million) to the International Committee of the Red Cross and support the ICRC’s rebuilding efforts in the Tsunami affected countries including NorthEast Sri Lanka.
