Day 30 Tue 28/9 Seabra/Lencois A rough night in the bus. Didnt sleep well. Way too uncomfortable and the bus felt like a commerial freezer! Reached Seabra an hour late at 09:00, but it suits me since it means that my wait for the bus to Lencois will be shorter. There is nobody else in […]

Here you go, Ruth! The fish only looks small on camera. In reality, it was about 2m long and so heavy that I was scared it would sink the boat. It needed my superhuman strength to get it out of the water and hold it for the photo!

I had been to Sao Paulo in 2005 and didnt like it much! Now, after nearly 3 days here, it is starting to grow on me. Sao Paulo has 20 million residents and is the New York of South America. The economic centre, where the folks work incessantly and where the rich take to helicopters […]

Day 11 Thu 9/9, Ilha Grande (Villa Abraao) “When from our better selves we have too long been parted by the hurrying world, and droop, sick of its business, of its pleasures tired, how gracious, how benign is solitude” I’ve probably got it all wrong and can’t remember who wrote that. I had a day […]

Day 9 Tuesday Sept 7, Rio/ Ilha Grande (Villa Abraao) Another (free) breakfast at the hostel with fruits, fruit juices, bread and cake. It seems like a Brasilian thing, cake for breakfast! Day 5: Sept 3, Rio/Niteroi I woke up early and took the bus to the city centre. My attempt at speaking Portuguese elicited a smile and a shake of the head from the pretty conductor (In Brasilian buses, you enter through the front and pay a person who is in charge of taking money, giving […]

I must down to the seas again To the vagrant gypsy life To the gull’s way To the whale’s way Where the wind’s like a whetted knife And all I ask is a merry yarn from a laughing rover and quiet sleep and a sweet dream when the long trip’s over My year as a nomad […]
