Skye’s The Limit

January 5th, 2007

Yesterday was an entire day just on the Isle of Skye. The weather was decent, not perfect but good. Some occasional mist but really there was some sun, and it is Scotland in winter, so will not complain.

Since we were spending another night on Skye in Kyleakin (think I spelled that right), the morning was easy not having to pack and load the bus. So, easy start to the day and we were up to a couple of stops before lunch. Did a little sight seeing before stopping in Portree, the largest place on Skye. Portree has a pop around 4,500, so like Montezuma back home. Really nice place. Had this fantastically nice bakery. Couldn’t tell you WHAT I had, but was something lemon and another strawberry, my two favorite flavors. Read the rest of this entry »

Scotland: Edinburgh And Beyond

January 3rd, 2007

Edinburgh to Oban

Yesterday morning was up “bright” and early to make my way to the Haggis Adventures office on High Street. Was so paranoid about oversleeping that I did not sleep well and ended up being first there. It was only by a short time, though, literally less than a minute.

By 8:30am, we were all checked in and loaded up on the bus. Our bus is mostly Australians, Kiwis (New Zealanders), and Americans. The age range is wild, from 18 to 70-something, but honestly, the 70-something year old German couple are way outside the norm range for the trip. There are plenty in my age bracket as well, not that it seems to matter much. I’m amused by questions about what my major is… uhm… a job… Read the rest of this entry »

Edinburgh: All Wet

January 1st, 2007

Some of you may have seen on the news that Edinburgh’s street party was cancelled last night. All told since I’d been before, this wasn’t crushing news for me. It was still a unique event in my life. Read the rest of this entry »

Edinburgh: Multiplicity

December 31st, 2006

As beautiful as yesterday was, today was its antithesis, but I’d read as much about today’s weather.

I had a very late start.  I think I stirred this morning around the appropriate time to wake-up, but I thought better of it.  I didn’t actually wake up until about 10:30am local time.  And by the time my lazy bones really left, it was noon.  Suffice to say that lunch was breakfast today.  Read the rest of this entry »

Edinburgh or Bust or Both

December 30th, 2006

First, if you spot some strange characters, it’s going to take me a bit to get used to the UK keys again, so bear with and all that jazz.

With each trip, I seem to be more haphazardly packing at the last minute. This one was made worse by a Christmas gift gone wrong. One of my gifts was a new lens for my camera. Well, of course, turns up defective. My luck ya know. So, day after Christmas, I called and explained the problem with the lens and that I wanted a replacement by Thursday as possible as I was heading to the airport Friday morning. Oh, no problem, I was told. No problem if they had mailed it that day. Or if they had mailed it the next day and sent it anything other than GROUND… right… ground, the day before… I can at least say I’ve had remarkably good luck with them over all, why I’m not dragging names into it. But Thursday found me calling around various camera places in Atlanta until I found… ding.. ding… same lens, same price. Only fun part was is the company in question is really mail order but you can pick up in the evening, which is what I did. Read the rest of this entry »

And The Winner Is…

August 29th, 2006

Okay, I waffled a million ways from Sunday about going to Egypt around New Years.  But of course, after I thought about it two days, the airfare was up over $300 more than it was when I first looked.  And maybe alone not enough of a reason, but I found a good deal somewhere else, somewhere I know I’ll love. Work Week’s End

August 18th, 2006

As always, work week has been rough and I’m looking forward to some comparable weekend downtime. I recently finished working through all of my pictures of Italy. It’s not that I don’t have tons more from both local travel and just around town. It’s just that gets me back to the old where to go next thing. Read the rest of this entry »

California, I Hardly Knew Ye

August 8th, 2006

Back in Georgia and playing a little catch-up, here.

Saturday night, I finished packing and hit the hay. To no avail, I was dead tired Sunday morning. I had planned to meet Jackie around 9am. Ended up being more like 10am, but I think we had time to be lazy. Jackie got to be navigator as I thrust the AAA directions on her. They are better in some ways than tripquest, but all of them have their own special brand of confusion. I think I’m better off when I take the time to re-write their directions in my idea of easy to understand.

At any rate, it was an Read the rest of this entry »

Burned Out

August 6th, 2006

Saturday saw an early start. My intention was to be amongst the Redwoods for Sunrise. This was possible only because I am three hours outside of my time zone in my favor. Still, I didn’t go to bed early, so it wasn’t exactly a fun awakening when the alarm went off.

Was supposed to meet Aaron and June here at the hotel so far as I know, but I waited half an hour past our planned meet time and had neither call nor sight of them. With no idea how to get them since they were also on the move, I went ahead and went off on my own. Hours later as I emerged from the Redwoods, I got a voicemail. I’m not sure when it was, but it sounded like they had overslept. I’m guessing, but I’m sure I’ll find out later. Hated missing them, but hopefully will get the chance to catch up with them in the future. Read the rest of this entry »

California or Bust

August 5th, 2006

As it’s almost 11pm and I’ve plans to get up ridiculously early to meet Aaron and June, this installment will be necessarily short.

For those not in the know, I’m out in San Jose for a business meeting on Monday that I’m thankfully able to make a long weekend out of. As these chances don’t exactly grow on trees, I’m trying to make the most of it.

Unfortunately, the road here was bumpy. We spent two long nights preparing, and as a result, I’m beat. Thursday night, we left the office around 11pm and I still had to go home and pack. Oy! Read the rest of this entry »
