Here it begins…

Tuesday, August 14th, 2012

It’s 11pm on Tuesday 14 August 2012. I’ve just begun in earnest to contemplate a year out from work starting in January 2013.

I’ve got my vague list of places I want to go, using as much surface travel as possible. I’m dreaming as I write of boarding the train somewhere in England and getting off in Moscow… taking the train across Siberia to Mongolia for some trekking and exploring there (not least in the Gobi desert). Then on to Beijing to catch a ferry to Japan. India’s high on the list, as are Chile and Argentina.

It’ll be done in chunks of a couple of months away punctuated by a month or so in the UK, and then off again.

I’m not so interested in frantic sightseeing, but rather I just want to enjoy journeying and experiencing life in other places. I want to eat the food, drink the wine, see how people live, and do some volunteering along the way.

I expect that planning it all will be a journey in itself, and I’m looking forward to swapping stories and picking up tips and suggestions from other people who’ve ‘been there and done that’.

So, here it begins…
