Old New Year Post

I hope the new year is starting off well for everyone. I actually wrote this post a few weeks ago and then forgot to publish it!

We celebrated the big night in Austria for the first time.  Everyone converged on the town square, and even though it was cold, they kept warm with some dancing and gluhwein.  At midnight the DJ stopped the techno music and put on some Strauss waltzes.  The crowd seemed to love it and kept on dancing.  It’s great tradition and I found it very endearing.

One other tradition here is fireworks.  They sell them everywhere, even in the grocery stores. And I’m not just talking about a few sparklers or firecrackers… these are serious rockets.  Although you are technically not supposed to fire them off inside the town, no one seems to pay attention to that rule.  Even stranger, we saw lot of parents buying them for the kids.  I can only guess at how many fingers are lost every January.

Here’s a fireworks stand down the street from us:

Anyway, a belated Happy 2011 to those in the US and a pre-emptive Happy Lunar New Year to those in Asia!
