Working Hard

I’ve been working around 50 hours a week at two jobs. 40hrs at the office job and then every weekend at the Subi. It’s actually kinda fun working at the restaurant. It’s a good change of pace, although that was not my impression after my first Saturday night closing shift. The first Saturday night shift a couple weeks back was stressful! It was non-stop. Partly because it is a trendy hang out for the yuppies and partly because after the Footy game, everyone goes for drinks. I was constantly running food and beverages to tables all night. By the middle of the shift, I was having pain in my wrist. I could barely hold a plate in each hand without feeling like I was dropping it before I reached the tables. I had to rush from the kitchen to the tables or to stop half way in the restaurant and readjust my grip. This obviously does not look good. But after letting the Food Co-ordinator know about it, he still made me run large dishes… By the end of the night, I considered quitting because it seemed to me the restaurant was always this busy. And the next couple of days I had sore wrists.

But this last Sat I worked the closing shift again and it wasn’t nearly so bad. The restaurant wasn’t slow but it was constant. I got to work a function (21st b-day) upstairs offering nibbles around the room in between running food. The FC, Germaine, is really nice and we chatted while I waited for food. She was really kind and caring and was like she was taking me under her wing. After the kitchen closed I got assigned to help out the bar and became a Glassy. I am one of those people wandering around collecting all the empty glasses. I can carry about 3/4 of an armlength of glasses which is about 8 glasses… This time, it was fun, I enjoyed myself and I’m glad I stuck with it. Don’t care if I ever get assigned a section, I’m ok with being a beverage and food runner.

The only bad thing is I think the Managers purposely schedule us so we never have a day off together. This upcoming week, Eveline is working every night except Thursday and I’m working evenings from Thursday to Sunday!

Well, there’s been nothing else to report lately except that I’m a reality tv junkie again now that I have tv… Jerry Bruckheimer’s Amazing Race is on and it’s good! Australia Big Brother is on every night, and that’s really good. Better than the American Version. Less “sensational talk show” and more control exercised by Big Brother.

It’s sad. I need to get out more in the evenings but everything closes early here in Australia. Even grocery stores close at 6pm so if I need to get something, I have to rush home after work to get it. On the plus side, this means that the bar closes at 1am on the weekends and I get to go home earlier than I would if I was working at a restaurant/bar at home. Sunday is even better, the kitchen closes at 10pm!
