And then we got high!

December 25th, 2004

We thought it would be a good idea to get a bit more altitude in before we brave the Inca trail in a couple of weeks. Potosi is around 4 hours by bus from Sucre or 2.5 – 3 hours by expresso cab, all in all 100 miles. Being the flash-packers that we are, we chose the latter and a mere two hours later, our F1 driver deposited us outside the Hotel Colonial in Potosi (he`d also stopped for fuel, tolls, and slowed down to eye up some totty on the way).

The Christmas ´works do´

December 25th, 2004

We decided to bring both guide books with us – there was space in the rucksack, and part of the fun of travelling is checking out just how accurate the entries really are. So, our second night in Sucre was planned around just this – each reading a guidebook, comparing notes and then setting off for dinner. At least we had a plan to begin with!

A whole day in Sucre

December 25th, 2004

Life at the Hostal de Su Merced just gets better. The rooms are beautiful, it`s lovely and quiet and the breakfast is stunning! Loads of fresh fruit and bread, feshly squeezed juice and fresh cakes – banana, lemon meringue, cherry cheesecake. My Father-in-Law would be in his element! Just what we need to set us up for the day.

Beggars´ Belief

December 25th, 2004

There really isn´t much difference between any city or town across the world when it comes to beggars and those who have fallen on hard times or never had the chance to hold some silver in their hands. They are there, you are there, and the gulf that is so apparent between rich and poor makes you stop for one moment and ask – ´what if I were in their shoes?´. Of course we´d hope that someone would give usmoney if it were the case, but the rights and wrongs of giving money when you have it bear some thought……

Sucre 19 December 04

December 25th, 2004

We hopped out of Sucre airport – very small, and into Mario`s taxi. Mario is cool. If we want to go somewhere, he`ll take us there. He knows the routes. He knows what we want to see. He even sounds cool – remember Max from Heart to Heart?! It was about 10 minutes drive to the centre of Sucre. The dwellings weren`t as bad as we`d imagined – certainly seen worse in other countries. But the packs of copulating dogs were still to be found on most street corners.

A short hop to Bolivia

December 23rd, 2004

Back at Lima airport, it was like we´d never been away. Withdrawal symptoms from departure boards and “bing-bongs” had started to set in – or maybe I was just fed up of hearing about “the toe”!

We checked in smoothly, all the rearrangments were confirmed, and it was looking as though we might finally make it to Bolivia!

The Lima Limp

December 20th, 2004

We wandered outside the hotel for a short while, got some food (ridiculously cheap), and then came back at about 7pm. We´d been up for getting on 42 hours by now, and the plan was to sleep, sleep, sleep until 4am the next morning when we´d be back at the airport all over again. At least that was the plan……..

Exhausted

December 20th, 2004

While we´d been with Judy in the Continental office, we´d tried to get some free accommodation from them for all the inconvenience. Now, okay, you might think this is pushing it a bit far, since our flights on to Bolivia had all now been re-booked (albeit one day later than planned), but it was worth a try.

Nothing to declare

December 20th, 2004

With no sadness whatsoever, we managed to take off from Miami just before dawn on….can´t remember what morning. But not before we´d spotted a suspect package and told someone about it, only to immediately think “oh no, we´ve just set about delaying our plans even further!”.

As the crew arrived in the departure lounge, the largely Peruvian contigent of passengers burst into a spontaneous round of applause. Now, we thought this was a sarcastic gesture, but we were to learn this was common practice in these parts.

Welcome to Miami!

December 19th, 2004

We´ve read about the OTT procedures recently adopted by US immigration and can vouch for their complete lack of organisation. They also publish a list of pledges, including one about being corteous to passengers, but we´re not sure if they know the meaning of the word.
