About Me and This Trip

March 6th, 2006

After finishing college in Washington, D.C., I packed up two suitcases of stuff and flew across the country to Sacramento, California. What I thought would be a summer-long adventure turned into a full-fledged life in California for the next nearly nine years. I lived in the Bay Area for most of that time, and then left in September 2004 for a round-the-world trip that took me through South America, India, Southeast Asia, and England. I arrived back in California, this time Los Angeles, in July 2005. But things haven’t worked out as expected here in L.A., so I’m looking for a new place to live. All these years in California I’ve always said to myself and others that I wasn’t in CA for good–I always expected I’d go back east eventually. While on my RTW trip I started to think that it would be nice to live close to my family again, and here I am, working as a freelance book editor, with the ability to go virtually anywhere, and I’ve decided it’s finally time. I’m driving up to Northern California to say goodbye to people and places, then starting a long, slow, circuitous drive across the country, visiting family and friends and interesting places on the way to my parents’ house in New Jersey, my base while I find a new city to call home. As long as my 1987 Toyota Tercel, nicknamed Rolo for his creamy caramel hue, holds out (and even if he doesn’t), the trip should be a great adventure. I hope you’ll come along for the ride!

Countdown Begins…

March 6th, 2006

I’ve made plans in San Francisco for Sunday, March 19, so that’s the day I have to be moved out of my apartment and drive north. I have less than two weeks to finish packing up my stuff (two suitcases, followed by several boxes, came with me to CA, but there’s a lot more leaving with me almost nine years later!), mail it to my parents in New Jersey, pack Rolo with the essentials, and get rid of all the stuff I’m not taking with me. I also have 30 hours of editing left to do on a project due March 14, and another project arriving March 15. No, I’m not stressed… some of the time.
