Angkor What?

I just couldn’t resist that title. We’re now at Siem Reap, 6 hours north-west of PP. The main attraction is Angkor Wat, (Wat being a temple). It is a huge area of ancient temple ruins just sitting out in the middle of nowhere. I’m not big on temples and old buildings and usually like to see one or two and then I’ve had enough, but this place is very impressive! For those of you who remember Indiana Jones and Tomb Raider some of it was filmed here and I now know why.
It covers such a huge area that you can get a 1,3 or 5 day pass. We decided a 1 day would be enough and hired a tuk-tuk and driver for the day. The driver takes you round and waits for you while you look in one area and then takes you to the next. It was very magical and the detailed stone carving truly amazing. The girls enjoyed it more than I thought they would, partly because they could climb up and all over the ruins and they loved that. Charlotte was a bundle of tears by the end, completely exhausted and once again on Daddy’s shoulders. It was scorching hot and we all couldn’t wait to get back to stand under the cold shower. A great day and a must see for anyone who gets the chance to come to this part of the world!
Our plans for the rest of our time in Cambodia are to spend a few more days here in Siem Reap, then head back to PP to see our sponsored child(who is in a village about 1 1/2 hours out of PP). We’ve changed the date for so that we have more time up here. There are a few possibilities up here that we’re looking into, like helping out an orphanage and teaching a bit of English. There are loads of cool things being done here to help out the local people and it would be great if we can do something while we’re here. Back in PP we’re hoping to head to the rubbish dump and give out some food and clothes to kids that live there. There’s an organisation that co-ordinate it so hopefully that will work out with our plans.

Hi Kim & Co,
I enjoy reading about all your adventures. It’s been great catching up with Catherine and Steven (seems like they have never been away). We had dinner one night and another night they came to drop off the kids for a sleepover and ended up staying for 5 hours, not 5 mins and it was lovely. The girls have all reconnected as though they had never been away. Helen, Catherine and I did lunch the other day (we missed you) out at Catherine’s. I have news!!!! I am leaving Kaurilands to be the Associate Principal – Middle School at Gladstone School. It’s all very exciting (and slightly scary). I had the interview a couple of weeks ago,but today I got to go for morning tea and meet the teachers I would work with jsut today. I start my new job in Term 4 – and I get an office!!!! We have been stalking the high schools in the last week or so finding a place for Antonia. She went off Mount Albert Grammar when she found out they don’t have soft materials (no sewing!!!). I think she will go to Green Bay – smaller, with sewing and very warm, welcoming people. Take care of yourselves. Have fun. Love from Claire & Co.
WOW! Big news all right! That’s fantastic.Great to hear from you. Sad to miss all these fun get-togethers but looking forward to great catchups when we get back. Say hi to Catherine and Steven.xx
re: ‘we left the camera cord in our luggage in Phnom Penh’
I am surprised this is the first thing we have heard you have left behind…infact I am guessing little bits of the Wills have been left throughout Asia!! You must have a bit of room in your luggage now :p
I met Rebecca & Daniel (could be David….) at church yesterday – Daniel (David??) used to work at Adventure Specialties a while ago…..went to Papatoetoe Baptist or something like that….anyway we were talking about church cafes and I mentioned you and since there are not many ‘Tim & Kim”s in the world everything fell into place. They are back in Akld cause she is doing her Masters at Laidlaw College, and have come to TBC for a couple of weeks.
Anyway must go and do dinner….Monday night and Grant is at Uni – last week we had Pancakes for dinner, and I think the girls are hopeful of something equally as cool….they may be disapointed with the scrambled eggs I offer them!
