Aerial Photos: A God’s-Eye View of the DC area
Scroll Down for Photos…
As a young woman born in the Beaver-Cleaver era of the 1950’s, my dream of flying my own plane was not normal. And who had the money for the training anyway? What to do? Hey, I know. I’ll join the military and let them pay for my training.
So with the ink still wet on my college diploma from an all-girls’ school, I joined the Navy, hoping for paid training as a hot-shot pilot. Turns out it was illegal to train women to fly Navy planes when I signed up during the Vietnam War.
These days I leave the flying to my retired Naval-aviator husband. Mel is my own private pilot, flying us both off into the wild blue, in our Cessna-150 Aerobat, for weekend adventures. He flies. I shoot.
Living around Washington, DC post -9/11, we won’t be flying our small plane over the District any time soon to snap some nice pics of the Cherry Blossoms near the Lincoln Memorial.
Still, there is a lot of air space we can cover outside of that 10-mile-radius exclusion zone centered on Reagan International Airport.
Here are a few pictures from my flying travels around the larger DC area. I’ll post more pictures here in days to come as time and adventures allow.

I hope I’m the first to comment. I am truly overwhelmed. What a great blog.
Ah, it’s nice when your husband is a big fan. Thanks, Mel! : )
Great photographic piece on the Naval Academy! Love the blog site! The two bridges shot is still my favorite.
These are ”wow” images. And I really enjoy the blog site….feel like I’m taking the journey with you.
Buff! Excellent website, you Rock! Annapolis is one of my favorite travel memories. Loved the home page and “classical music as a weapon” piece. Can’t wait to see more photos. Wow. I am so impressed with the outcome of your hard work. Keep it up!
The Two Bridges photo is my favorite too. I liked the Historic Downtown Annapolis shot too though. While site seeing there one day nearly 20 years ago, I had lunch in a restaurant that’s almost exactly in the center of that shot.
