More London
Here are a few more things of interest when I was in London. There’s a place in Hyde Park called Speaker’s Corner, where anyone can get up and talk about whatever they want, while people listen…or not.
I couldn’t tell what this woman was talking about, but she had a huge crowd and people were really angry and yelling at her.
Most speakers were promoting one religion or another, sometimes right next to each other, competing for ears.
Nobody was listening to this poor guy.
Among all the religious folk, I spotted a guy talking about science. That seemed pretty unusual, so I asked one of the people what was up. It turns out they were a group of physics students at a London university, and they lost a bet on a cricket match. The punishment was speaking at Speaker’s Corner. I think this whole situation has deep theological meaning, but I’m not quite sure what.
Then I headed over to Greenwich to see the Royal Observatory. Unfortunately, after taking a long Tube journey, and walking through Greenwich and up the huge hill, the observatory was closed (shame on you, incorrect visitor’s guide). But I did see the building from the gates and stood on THE Meridian.
This morning I headed out to see some of non-London England. I don’t feel I got the true English experience in London, because half of the people here are visitors themselves. Hopefully that will change as I get further from major cities (nothing against visitors, of course). But I’ve met several people in the hostels that have good traveling tips to places I’m headed.
Thank you to everyone for reading and commenting! I don’t promise to be quite so frequent or interesting in the future, but it’s cool to be able to keep in touch this way.

Hi Megan!
Sounds like you are off to a great start…I like the pics and especially the ones of you proving you are still alive…HAHAHA…so keep sending those.
Bradhawk wants to be added to your list, here’s his e-mail address: BradHAWK@tourette.net
Jealous of You,
Wendy
That was so-o-o- weird!! and kinda cool at the same time. I guess they know the real meaning of free speech there. Your legs will be in great shape by the time this trip is done!
Love ya!
Mom
very cool! Too bad about the observatory. They have a nice exhibit on chronometers there. When you get back, you should read the book “longitude” (if you haven’t) all about effort to make accurate clocks to calculate position on sea voyages.
Hey Megan, I really enjoy the updates. I appreciate the fact that you have included both Deborah and me in sharing your great adventure. Knowing that you went to see a play based on the Monty Python Player’s greatest movie as one of your first “cultural events”, just confirms what I had suspected all along. You have excellent taste. Have you run across the Hepworth Department Store? My mother has done a bit of Genealogy and has traced some of our ancestry to that old store. Enjoy the sights and experiences and remember that we continue to be your biggest supporters (in Texas). Love, Mark
Hi,
First time checking things out. Looks like you are having an interesting time. I wonder what would happen if people over here would stand somewhere and speak their mind. Look forward to keeping up.
love ya!
Aunt Sharon
You should have stood up and repeated verbatim the speach of Brian to his ‘deciples’. At least a few in the crowd would have recognized it. The rest would probably be following you around the globe… Maybe not such a good idea.nrLater, Megan Meridian!
Wheee! We had a place in college where crazy religious people got up and yelled and whomever they want–it was called a class room! *bud-dum ching*
I can’t wait to see your shot of north o’ London.
Since the company I work for is launching a Stonehenge board game soon, are you heading up to ye olde Salisbury Plain during your visit to the Motherland?
Cheerio!
Okay, mental note: no typing with baby in lap. Of coure that should’ve read “at whomever they want”.
*sigh*
Looks like you’re heading to all the required touristy spots. I hope you have made it to the Tower of London. It was my favorite place I visited. That and the theater. Jealous that you saw Spamalot!
Hey Meg! Where are you?
Thank you for the Mother’s day gift – I can’t believe you remembered Mother’s day before you left!
You’re the BEST!!!
Love you alot!!
Mom
