Day 20: Munich, Germany

Monday, September 26th, 2005

After last nights beer indulgence it was time to go see the City and take in some sights. With just today left here I just headed off into town and would just let my feet take me anywhere that looked interesting.

Walking through Munich’s main streets, it was far more commercialised than I had anticipated. I guess it felt more like walking through a City Centre back home than anything else. After opting for a fast food breakfast to get me going I stumbled on a street market. Contained within was an open air seating area, arranged somewhat like the inside of the tents at the Oktoberfest. The tables seemed pretty much full with everyone outside drowning themselves in Bavarian Beer. The time? 10:30am. I guess it’s never too early to start drinking around here!

Sure enough my feet just carried me here, there and everywhere, taking in buildings or areas that just looked like they may be interesting. I wound up somewhere by a University and rather grand looking building. The grounds led into a small park, a maze of little paths shooting off and a band stand in the middle where you could be entertained by the rather talented busker. I wish I knew more of what I was seeing but without a guidebook or anything similar it was just a case of wonder and take it all in.

My brain and feet feeling a little jaded and last nights endeavours catching up with me I grabbed a seat at a bar on my way back and just let the day unwind for an hour with a coke until I felt rejuvenated and headed back to the scene of the crime….Oktoberfest.

Ahhhh, Oktoberfest! My return this time was of an entirely different nature. This time it was alcohol free! No, don’t choke on your peanuts in amazement. I had an agenda. I actually wanted to take it all in, go see what the Oktoberfest had to offer, and besides, that 6.44am train was going to be hard enough to catch without the aid of the amber nectar!

The place had the feel of a big carnival or fair, super rides most of which would cause even the most steady of tums to lose its grip on reality (man, imagine going on some of these things after a few steins!! – That’s just going to be messy!!). Amazed as well by the sheer number of people in traditional attire, walking about as if it was normal (which in many ways, I guess it is) and the sheer size of some of those hotdogs! I had to try didn’t I! The Germans certainly do their beer in style!

Sights taken in, pictures taken, brain and body in need of a rest, I headed back to the hostel, this time successfully, in about 15 minutes and get my stuff packed and ready for an early exit in the morning.

Day 8: Barcelona, Spain

Wednesday, September 14th, 2005

The sun, the sand, the sea! Now, I could handle this on a more regular basis!! With so much to do and see in Barcelona, I opted for the only sensible choice, a day at the beach! Actually it was partly a way to explore that side of town and have a good walk down through the beach area of Barcelona, and I couldn’t have wished for a nicer day to go and do it!

Looking at my map (yes, the Shari one!) it looked easy enough….head out to the bottom of the Ramblas, turn left and basically keep walking. Had there not been a port and several buildings in the way, this would, indeed have been pretty simple. As it was, I ended up following my nose for a while and trying to keep as close to the shore as possible. This wasn’t always that easy and I ended up slightly off track (rather fortunately as it turned out) and figuring the way back to where I wanted to be, headed on through a delightful little park! Perfectly peaceful and just away from the usual tourist crowds, walking through I felt genuinely lucky I had got slightly lost!

The park took me out onto the sea front and the beach. I was somewhat surprised at how quiet it was but guessed it was now out of school holidays and a lot of the usual tourists were safely locked up in their jobs at home! All the better for me! Not really thinking before I came out this morning, I hadn’t packed a towel (as if one of those travel towels would actually do me any good on a beach) so decided my bum was better placed on one of the grassy banks than on the sand itself. From there I could soak up the sun, read my book and admire the beautiful ladies without getting sand all over my backside!

Feeling the heat slightly I ended up going for a couple of beers in the shade, and have to admit, for the first time on this trip, sat back and just relaxed! It was at that moment I really started to feel like I was travelling and really enjoying seeing somewhere new yet able to unwind and start taking it all in!

I met up with a few of my roommates later in the afternoon (a couple e of Scottish lads who had come to Barcelona to try and find some work and a guy from Oz). What we did that evening, was, well, rather British! We managed to get a few more guys (and Francis, the girl who was asleep in my room when I arrived yesterday) together and headed out to a bar to watch football! Yep, here I was in Barcelona, watching Man U in the Champions League in an Irish bar! Of the things I said I’d avoid on my travels, this was number 2 (right behind 1: Have a McDonalds). I successfully managed to knock number 3 off the last as well before we got home by tucking into a rather tasty kebab!

Day 2: Lille, France

Strange things, dorms! I've figured that out already! Take last night (my first night in any hostel, in any city, anywhere, ever - You get the idea) for example. Now the room sleeps 5, seems simple enough, right. Now I'd ... [Continue reading this entry]
