Xi’an, Shaanxi Province

Impressive or what…????

Hi All!

Here we are in Xi’an, capital of Shaanxi Province, and one time capital of China. This city of 6 million is also a walled city, following along the traditional city grid layout. This is a very modern city, very clean, with some well preserved sights. It actually reminds Quene a lot of Madrid, the wide streets, clear skys, and it’s not too cold, just yet. Much milder than Pingyao or Beijing, i’s about 700km southwest of Beijing. There is a large Muslim population in town, close to the hostel we’re staying at. Close to the mosque there is a street lined with food stalls and restaurants selling typical food, such as lamb and beef skewer kebabs for 1yuan (10 cents!). There’s also an excellent history museum.
Porcelain figure from the museum:

The centre of town is marked by the Bell Tower, where the bell is rung every hour.
Bell Tower:

Xi’an’s major tourist drawcard is actually about 30 km outside of town, and that is the Terracotta Army! Discovered by 4 farmers digging their fields in 1974, there are currently 8,000 uneartherd warriors, horses and chariots. They were originally painted, but with exposure the paint has worn off. Every face is unique, they are lifesize soldiers in complete traditional battle formation. They were created for the then Emperor Qin Shi Huang over 2200 years ago. We took a few pics, hope you like them. These excavations are commonly considered as the Eight Wonder of the World!

On yer bike!
Now if only I could remember where I parked my bike!

Horses and Warriors:

Some warriors are incomplete, over 100,000 pieces have been unearthered so far!!!!

    : )

    Besos !

    Hi James! Hi Cristina!

We had a look at your webiste today. Myself and the same group of students that you met. We were particularly interested in the pictures of the Terracota Warriors and The Great Wall as these are important culturally and historically and the students would have been already aware of them. However most – in fact nearly all of them – have never visited either of them!

The class split into 7 groups of 4 students and their assignment was that each group had to write a message and post it on the website in their free time.

I gave them a brief update on your progress and some funny comments were made – by them not me! I told them to include these in their messages if they could but their English may not be up to it!

Anyway just wanted to let you know. I’m going to scold them if they don’t write to you :-))

I love the pics by the way. One of you must be a bit of a pro with the camera?

    Good luck and take care.

    Hi All,
We are in Yangshuo, (the mecca of all backpackers), the landscape is amazing (like this old chinese paintings, we actually thought there weren’t real..but here we are looking them with our very eyes). The weather is not so great , there is a cold wave in China from Siberia …. we just thank we are not in Beijing now or even Xian.. After a never ending trip to Yangshuo we will enjoy the last week in China 🙁
But happy because we are looking foward to see the sun again.
Thanks for your posts and comments … , we have more nice photos to saw you ..soon!

    jet,jolly,ken,ella :
The terracota warriors were found broken but there are many archeologists putting all the pieces together so everybody can enjoy their beauty. They’ve found 8,000 so far, but they say there could be thousands more undiscovered in the area!

    Mabel, Mandy, Lee, Frankie
My leg is better now and I am not using the stick anymore but I have to be careful , I didn’t go to the doctor because I don’t speak chinese and I thought will be difficult to explain myself..but I took rest and put ice 3 times a day…and watch a lot of basketball on TV. 😉

    Rose,Ainnie,Mark,Alex:
We are very happy you can see a bit of China from or website and I hope one day you can visit these places as well.

    Carol, Terence, Paul & Howard:
We love to travel and we don’t have a lot of money, we were saving for years to be able to do this trip. China and India and south America are very cheap compare to our countries so we can afford it .. We are very happy you liked the photos .

    Shirley, Tommy, Rachel & Kevin:
The great wall is very long , 6000 km , we just walked 10 Km
you can find more info here:

Did you know you can see the great wall from space..?
    Amazing !!!

we glad you like the photos thanks.. we have many more nearly ready , so you can enjoy the rest of the trip.

    Hi Hei,
