James & Quene travelling around the World

Looks like this is the last post from New Zealand, 🙁

We really had such a great time, and probably the best so far…!!!! This place is amazing!

Esp: Este es el ultimo post desde Aotearoa y nos da mucha pena dejarlo, con diferencia este es el mejor sitio donde hemos estado de momento.

We headed over to the east coast, where we visited Oamaru, home to several seal and penguin colonies, then on up to Christchurch and further north to Kaikoura to go whale watching.

Esp: Desde Queenstown nos dirigimos a la costa Este, donde visitamos Oamaru donde viven muchas colonias de pingüinos y focas, y de alli a Christchurch y Kaikoura mas arriba para ver ballenas

Here´s Oamaru, a small town on the south-east coast. They had this trip on an old steam train, it looked kinda cool, this town had a lot more older style buildings than most towns we´ve been to, here´s a good example. And we popped into a local radio station where Quene got a go to be DJ for a few minutes! They had a cool collection of really old radio sets too!

Esp: Esto es Oamaru, un pueblo pequeño al sur de la costa Este. Todo parece antiguo y te transporta a otra epoca, todo muy bien conservado. Entramos en una radio local, estuvimos hablando con el DJ quien me dejo entrar en la cabina por unos minutos y saborear las ondas radiofonicas, la musica gospel y 50´s, tambien tenian una magnifica coleccion de radios antiguas.

A 5 minute drive out of Oamaru and you come to the Yellow-Eyed penguin colony. These guys are quite shy, so you´re not allowed on the beach from 3.30pm when they start coming back to their nests for the night. These guys are about 70cm tall, so one of the larger penguin species, and alcan only be found in New Zealand. Later in ther everning about 6pm right beside the harbour in Oamaru there is a larger colony of smaller blue penguins, and it´s so funny watching large ´rafts´ of these little birds popping out of the sea, wobbling up the ramp to their nestboxes, that have been manmade for the in order to keep them breeding there and not under houses in the town where they had been nesting for quite a while! By the way there is a film called “the march of the penguins” is a must see.. brilliant!!

Esp: A 5 minutos en coche de Oamaru se puede ver a los “Yellow-Eyed penguin” o pinguinos de ojos amarillos (por una banda de este color que tiene en la zona del ojo). A partir de las 3:30 no se puede bajar a la playa, ya que a esa hora es cuando vuelven del mar para dar de comer a los churuns. Tienen 70cm de alto y solo se encuentran en NZ. Esa misma tarde fuimos a ver a los pequeñitos pingüinos azules, cuanto mas les observas mas increible te parecen estos animale, son nocturnos (el de la 3 foto estaba perdido, solo y a punto de cruzar una carretera, pero tanta gente paro para hacerle fotos, que posiblemente volviera al mar cansado de tanta atencion). Por cierto hay una pelicula ahora ” la marcha de los pinguinos”, la teneis que ver..increible!!

Further up the coast about 2.5 hrs north of Christchurch we stopped in Kaikoura to go whale watching, where they also have several seal colonies. The seals are so cute, and let you get real close to them, so we took some cool pics, as you can see!

Esp: En busca de mas animales fuimos a Kaikoura al Norte de Christchurch para ir a ver a las ballenas, para nuestra sorpresa vimos focas tan cerca que pudimos hacer un monton de fotos y casi rascarles la espalda!!

Finally the next day, we set out on a rough sea with 2 metre swells, in a high speed jetboat, not a nice experience getting out to the area where the whales were located. Quene was one of the first to make use of the sick bags, a few others followed shortly afterwards, after going over so many huge swells I thought I´d be next, but luckily it held off! Needless to say we saw plenty of Sperm Whales, averaging 18m in length, they surface for about 5-10 minutes where you can see their forward half sticking up out of the water and the characteristic spout from the blowhole. Curious fact is than in Kaikoura they used to hunt whales, but from 1964 not only they protect them but they have tours and encourage the rest of the world to stop hunting this magnificent animals.Well done!!

Esp: Ya no quedan muchas ballenas asi que ver a estos animales y conocer detalles de ellos y verlos tan cerca merece la pena… incluso si te pasas mareada todo el tour con olas de 2m y un barco supersonico que hacia peor la situacion, todavia no se como pude sacar fotos con la bolsita de papel en la otra mano.. :-S , vimos muchos Sperm Whales (no estoy segura que se llamen ballenas esperma), miden 18m de largo y estan en la superficie 5-10m para airear los pulmones y oxigenarse antes de volver a sumergirse, desde el barco no se ve mucho, solo cuando respiran, se puede apreciar el chorro de aire y agua. Como curiosidad en Kaikoura antes cazaban ballenas, desde que se cazo la ultima en 1964 no solo las protegen y te hablan de ellas tambien estan intentando convencer a otros paises para que dejen de matar a estos magnificos animales. Buen ejemplo!

Then as they´ve rested for a while on the surface they make their dive underwater showing off their huge tail as they head downwards. We were also lucky enough to spot 2 whales side by side, called ´logging´for obvious reasong, they look like 2 logs floating together!

Esp: Cuando ya han limpiado sus pulmones de dioxido de carbono durante esos 10 min aprox, y comienzan a sumergirse es cuando todo el mundo esta preparado con sus camaras para el momento mas importante, dicen que cada cola es unica como una huella dactilar… apenas dura unos segundos, en este momento es cuando realmente aprecias del tamaño de estos animales.. Tambien tuvimos la suerte de ver a dos ballenas aireandose juntas.

On the way back into Christchurch we stopped for the night in Hanmer Springs, a mountain village with some nice relaxing hot baths, great way to relax and unwind!

Esp: De vuelta a Christchurch paramos en Hammer Springs, otro pueblecillo en las montañas donde habian aguas termales para relajarnos en las calientes aguas sulfurosas.

Then we headed back to Christchurch for a couple of days before flying up to Auckland to catch our flight to Chile. Christchurch is a probably the most well preserved of New Zealand´s cities, being the second largest after Auckland with a population of approx 300,000. Here there are old trams, lots of old buildings, plus the centre point of town the Christchurch Cathedral, however nowhere near as grand nor as old as the Christchurch Cathedral in Dublin, aherm… Here´s a view of the tram with the cathedral in the background.

Esp: En Christchurch estuvimos un par de dias antes de dejar la isla sur. Esta muy bien conservado, muy cosmopolita, la segunda ciudad mas grande despues de Auckland con 300.000 habitantes. En el centro de la ciudad esta la Catedral de Christchurch no tan antigua como la de Dublin, pero tan bien bonita. detalle del tranvia desde donde se puede hacer un tour de la ciudad.

Other things to do in Christchurch, are get a cool tattoo, something I´ve always wanted, so where better to get one than in the land of the Moko, maori for Tattoo, they have a long tradition of tattooing, but this tradition was left behind with the arrival of the Pekuha (the white settlers).

Esp: Otra de las cosas que te puedes hacer aqui es un tatu, asi que hay que aprovechar en la tierra del Moko (tatuaje en maori), con una larga tradicion de tatuajes los jefes se tatuaban la cara con pigmentos sacados de algas, cuanto mas creativo era mas alta la posicion del jefe de la tribu, con la llegada del los Pekuha o colonizadores dejaron de hacerlo, afortunadamente quedan cuadros y fotos de los ultimos Chiefs con su tradicional moko.

Well back in Auckland we took a couple more pictures as the sun finally sets on our trip to New Zealand, we´ll leave you with the university, and the famous Sky Tower.

Esp: De vuelta en Auckland visitamos los museos que nos quedaba y hicimos las ultimas fotos de nuestro viaje, la universidad y la puesta de sol con el Sky tower.

New Zealand or Aotearoa, we´ll miss you a lot..!!
