Special Surfing (Noosa,Coolangatta, Byron Bay)

G’Day from the Sunshine Coast (north of Brisbane), Gold Coast (South of Brisbane) and Byron Bay (Northern N.S.W Coast!!!) all great swimming and surfing beaches, no jellyfish, nor crocodiles in the sea now that we’re officially out of the tropics, having passed south of the Tropic of Capricorn! 1st time for James to surf in the Pacific Ocean, in Noosa! Just give me a few more lessons and I’ll be world class material!

Just south of the Sunshine Coast, and a bit inland are the Glass House Mountains, forming part of the local Aborigins Dreaming – Creation of the World mythology.

James gets up a monster’s nose outside the wax museum at Surfers Paradise!

From Coolangatta you have a great view accross the bay to Surfers’ Paradise, no more one story houses here! This spot is the most high rise of all the coast.

Just 5 minutes inside the campsite and Quene’s scoring hoops! Been a while, but she can still show off the perfect technique!

James after a few surfing lessons, really he’s a born natural!!! Ah no this is the world championship tour at Coolangatta, southern Gold Coast!

IMG_4887.jpg  IMG_4941.jpg

Lots of surfer chicks too strutting down the beach, not sure if this girl is participating in the world championships, who knows…?

At the right spot at the right time, we cought Kelly Slater (USA) world #1 (left) and Mick Fanning (AUS) #2 (right) battle it out on the waves, some awesome surfing to be seen!

IMG_4937.jpg IMG_4951.jpg

These events attract big crowds, it’s an awesome sight. We caught the 1st round of the event, 2 weeks left to decide the winner, but you can find out on http://www.quiksilver.com!

IMG_4942.jpg IMG_4956.jpg

Byron Bay, accross the border in New South Wales, about 80km south of Coolangatta. A big hippie town, lots of surfers and backpackers make this place really chilled out! Not too mention the great surf and amazing beaches!

IMG_4982.jpg IMG_4991.jpg

Byron Head just at the tip of Byron Bay is Australia’s most eastern point. The light house was built in 1901, and shines 48km out to sea at night time! Looks a bit like Ireland, right?

James; are you sure you are standing on that board? Looks like you’re walking on water – is there something you’re not telling us!?
    The waves are awesome!
I took a surfing lesson on the Gold Coast last year and didn’t manage to stand up on the board for even a second, though I was only in the water trying for about 30 minutes! Takes patience and time, I didn’t have much of the latter.

    Hi guys,
We just found out that U2 cancelled the tours (or they are going to postponed them) , one of the member’s family is very sick…
We think is The Edge’s wife.. not sure.. Richie you probably hear more.. here the news are very bad.. too much sports news.
Tell us if you hear something more about it.
Not sure if we are going to make it to the new dates…we hope to see them ..cross fingers…
Thinking about this concert for so long and one week before and its cancelled.
Today is our last night in Sydney 🙁 (so double reason to be a bit sad).. After 2 months and a half in this land that feels like years, we did enjoy, we saw lots of things, and sure one day we will comeback to drive the other half of the country in campervan again.

    Ruari,
The guy of the graffitied surfboard was surprised when I took the pic. although he wan’t sure if I was taking a photo of him or the surfers behind..
The other one is deadly the kid surfing and the ship behind.

Still practising, you do need a lot of time, and definitely patience, but it’s great fun, and hard work. Hopefully I can get a few more attempts to improve while we are in New Zealand, but it won’t be as hot, full wet suits will be needed methinks!

Next post will probably be of the last few days in Oz, so you guys will have to wait that little bit longer for something from NZ…

Bye from OZ, from us both!

Remember no matter how much crap my husband gives you (for anyone else reading that is that annoying Ruairi guy!!) you are having a once-in-a-lifetime travelling opportunity – whereas U2 will tour again and in Dublin, there are such good odds of actually seeing them on the street! Which reminds me of last year when I passed right by Bono in the Shelbourne, I nearly died!! He’s so teeny!

    Hi Ruari & Mairead

yea, bummer about U2, but we’ve already seen them too… So we’re not that disappointed! So no need to rub it in 🙂 Yea probably easier to spot Bono in the street. The first week Quene was in Ireland she ‘bumped’ into Bono too!!!!

    Hola Blanca,

    Hi Mel,

    Hi Mon & Pete,
yea pity bout the gig. New Zealand is cool, in Wellington right now, gonna head up to Auckland (anyway) as we had flights and accom booked and it is Paddy’s Weekend! We’ll do a couple of weeks in the North Island, then head down south again by the end of March/beg. April. for a month or so, hope to see a lot down there the scenery is supposed to be amazing, real Lord of The Rings land!!!!! Not sure what dates we’ll be passing through Nelson, if your sister’s about, we can hook up, say hi, should be roughly end March/early April!

Well Kia Ora (Hello) from New Zealand!
Next post (1st of New Zealand) due in a few days, so keep tuned!

    Cheerio,
    James
