Salvador de Bahia:

Capital de Brasil hasta 1763 ,365 iglesias dicen que una para cada dia del año, arquitectura colonial, este es el centro historico, con sus academias de capoeira y el sonido de los tambores, el olor a acaraje, turistas y la sensacion de que estas en un lugar especial.

ENG: Capital of Brazil until 1763, with 365 churches, one for each day of the year! Plenty of well preserved colonial architecture, this is the historical centre, where there are many capoiera schools, lots of drums to be heard, the strong smell of Acaraje sold on many a street corner by Bahianas. Lots of tourists too.

En Salvador el 70% de la poblacion es afrobrasileño, una de las cosas que nos explicaban es que cuando eran esclavos la razon por la que no se unieron para luchar contra la esclavitud era porque eran de muchas religiones distintas, la iglesia en vez de prohibirlas, dejo que se practicasen paralelamente, asi que no habia mucha comunicacion entre ellos (un divide y gobernaras mas facil). Brasil fue creciendo con mucha diversidad religiosa y cultural que ha sobrevivido hasta ahora haciendo este pais uno de los mas importantes en cuanto a mestizaje.

ENG: 70% of Salvador’s population is Afro-Brazilian. We were told that the slaves from Africa never managed to unite and fight against their opressors, as each group of slaves came from a different region in Africa, so there were cultural and religious diferences hindering any kind of united front, the catholic church decided to allow these religions, this way they kept the different groups divided, making them easy to control (divide and conquer…!!!) As a result Brazil has grown into a highly religiously and culturally diverse country.

Vista de la Plaza de Pelhourinho, desde el museo de la ciudad se puede contemplar casi todo el Casco Antiguo,y ver a los bahianos en sus tareas diarias, cortando el pelo, charlando pintando pintura naif tipica de esta zona de Brasil, parece que el tiempo pasara mas despacio.

ENG: Here’s a view of the old town’s Pelourihno Square, with many a Bahiano/a doing their thing! Street barber, painting the typical style of painting from this area of Brazil. Seems like time passes much more slowly here!

A la caza del turista por unos reais, James entre dos “mozas ” bueno eran majas y nos echamos unas risas con ellas.

ENG: Hunting down tourists, to make a few Reais are these Bahianas, so we had a laugh and took a few pics!!!

Este es el Farol San Antonio de Barra el primero que se contruyo en las Americas en 1580 en el lugar donde toco tierra Amerigo Vespucci en 1501 aqui tambien esta el Museo Hidrografico.

ENG: This is the San Antonio da Barra lighthouse, the first lighthouse built in the Americas, built in 1580, on the spot where Amerigo Vespucci first landed in 1501. Here in the fort below is the Hydrografical Museum.

Cuando estuvimos aqui asistimos una celebracion del Dios Xango, uno de los Orixas mas importantes del Candomblé, religion afrobrasileña muy importante aqui, religion matriarcal que vino a Brasil con la llegada de los esclavos africanos y se ha mantenido hasta hoy, en la foto Oxum Muyiwa, Mae Senhora de Oxum, cabeza del “Ilé Axé Opo Afonjá” (una de las casas del Candonble con mas historia), tomamos estas fotos en el Museo Afrobrasileño, que justo coincidio con la hermandad que fuimos a ver, mas informacion sobre el candomble y ella en este link:

ENG: We also visited a Candomble ceremony, this is a religion which has its roots in African culture, brought over by the various groups of slaves. This matriarchal religion stemmed from the arrival of the slaves, and is just as strong today as it was 400 years ago. Unfortunately we couldn’t take pics at the ceremony, but here’s a photo of Oxum Muyia, Mae Senhora de Oxum, leader of the “Ilé Axé Opo Afonjá” Candomble church. Fue espectacular ver a los miembros en trance, el sonido de los tambores, los rituales y la ropa que utilizan, no estaba permitido el uso de camaras…una pena..que no os lo podamos enseñar como nosotros lo vivimos y sentimos.

ENG: It was amazing to watch the participants go into a trance, the rythmic sound of the drums, the rituals, the costumes, pity we coultn’d take photos to show you more!

Esto es en el aeropuerto de Salvador cuando decidimos volver a Sao Paulo, este vuelo posiblemente fue uno de los mas dificiles de tomar, Salvador es uno de los lugares mas interesantes de Brasil para visitar (aparte del Amazonas …claro), culturalmente muy rico, playas y paraisos para descansar, comida deliciosa y muy barato, pero no mejoraba el tiempo y sentimos que era hora de volver.. a ver si aprendemos a “voar rapido”.. 😉 y podemos seguir viajando.

ENG: Here in the Airport in Salvador, we had a tough time deciding to head back to Sao Paulo, with so much to see and do here, great beaches too, but the weather was turning nasty, even our hotel room was flooded…!!! In the pic below, Quene is “Learning to fly”!!!

Esperamos volver y esperamos aprender mas sobre esta cultura y disfrutar de las playas de Arraial d´Ajuda, Caraiva, Praia do Forte, volver a ver a la gente que conocimos aqui. etc..y igual para disfrutar del Carnavail Bahiano , quien sabe y por supuesto para enseñaros mas..

ENG: We’d love to come back to this part of Brazil, to learn more about the rich culture, and enjoy the beaches, when we get some guaranteed sun!!! Maybe Carnival would be a good time, they say its much more authentic than Rio…And we’d love to show it all to you!!!
