Montevideo – Uruguay

Hi all, well we took a break of a week, from the hustle and bustle of Buenos Aires, heading across the River Plate to neighbouring Uruguay (again) this time we headed further east, to the capital Montevideo (pronounced Montay Vidayo not Montyvideo!).

Old Bus Quene Balcony

Here’s Quene on the balcony of the hotel room we stayed at.

We spent a couple of nights there, on route to Cabo Polonio (wich we’re saving for the next post, as we took so many cool pics). Montevideo is a small city, about 1.5 million inhabitants, similar in size to Dublin, there are lots of tree-lined squares, low-rise architecture, and lots of excellently preserved old buildings especially in the Old City.

Next is the Palacio Salvo, built by architect Mariano Palanti in 1925, being the tallest building in South America for some time. There’s a replica in Buenos Aires, Palacio Barolo, which was designed to represent Dante’s Divine Comedy, and has a lighthouse on the roof… And at one time you could see right accross the River Plate to the twin tower in the neighbouring capital, some 200km away (that view has since been blocked by many high-rises built in Buenos Aires). Next is Quene outside the Teatro Solis.

Palacio Salvo Quene at Teatreo Solis

A stroll through the quiet streets of the old city, bought us to the port, and here’s a cool building – the Navy HQ, in Art-deco style with a cool tunnel underneath! Next is another well preserved old building, can’t remember the name though… Check out those balconies! And finally a bit of contrast of old vs modern styles surrounding the Plaza de la Independencia, the centre of town.

About 20 mins by bus takes you out to Pocitos, one of the many beach suburbs that line the coast. Here we caught a glimpse of French photographer Yann Arthus-Bertrand’s photo exhibition “The Earth From Above”, this is the 3rd time we’ve seen this exhibition, once in Stockholm, Sweden, then while we were in Wellington in New Zealand, and here in Montevideo, amazing or what??? who’s following who? Check out some of his amazing photos: http://www.yannarthusbertrand.com/yann2/affichage.php

Some schoolkids decided to get in on the photo, and that was the bus they arrived in, here there are so many old cars (from 50s and 60s) still running on the roads.

SA401454.JPG

Quien sigue a quien?

Old and new Pocitos Beach Schoolkids at Yann Arthus-Bertrand expo.

Well that’s just a taster of Uruguay, plenty more to come in the next post, Cabo Polonio an idyllic little hamlet set amongst the giant sand dunes further east some 5 hours away by bus and 4×4 (to get through the dunes).

So take care and come back soon.

    http://www.rte.ie/tv/noplacelikehome/

    http://pobladores.lycos.es/channels/lugares/Dublin/area/19

Howdy all back home, we were browsing the RTE website, looking for something to watch, there are lots of programmes that can be viewed online, one of them is No Place Like Home, where the presenter a mate of ours, Bob Kelly, meets people who have emigrated to Ireland and he goes back to their home country to see what they left behind, family, culture, etc. He did one of the episodes here in Argentina, pity we never knew he was doing the show at the time… Check out the archive http://www.rte.ie/tv/noplacelikehome/ and choose whatever country you want, for example Argentina 😉 , you’ll get a good idea of what Buenos Aires is like.

Quene is working on paintings for an exhibition we plan to do when we get back. One thing that would help us out is if you let us know what your favourite photo & post is. I know it’s a tough one for us too, which is why we need your help deciding!

Besos como quesos/Kisses like cheese (smelly, hahaha!!!)

ello again. Montevideo looks lovely. Honestly I see these pics (especially the architecture) and I wonder why the hell is Dublin so popular when these places you are barely aware of are so beautiful and yet undiscovered??
As for favourite pics, well the ones that stick in my mind would be the moon crater one from New Zealand – Tongoriro was it? That looked so amazing. And I am back to that fantastic flamingoes shot as the background on my computer in work…it’s soooo cool. But all the shots are really good, you are going to have a hard time choosing!

    Brrrrr…

It’s freezing, well about 15’C, but feels like 0, after about 8 months of 25’C plus… We had lots of rain the last week or so, and you can really tell the temperatures have plummetted, was a very balmy 292C last Friday! Hope that makes you guys back home feel somewhat better 😉

    Howdy Mairéad,
THe thing about Montevideo that stuck out was the architecture, really well preserved for this neck of the world, Buenos Aires has little of that left, and you have to strain your neck to see the sky, as far as height goes, Montevideo was similar to Dublin, maybe a few more skyrises, but you still get that airy feeling, which makes it much less claustrophobic.
Being away from Dublin for so long, you can actually see where it gets it’s charm, definitely not in the modern architecture though! Places like Trinners, GPO, Merrion Square and temple bar give it something, I guess, that other cities don’t have, alright it’s not Paris, but it could be worse, I guess.

Thanks for the vote on your photos. And the score so far:

Tongariro crossing (Tongariro, North Island, NZ) – 1

I’d have to agree they are great spots!

Which pictures are the best, thats a tough one there are so many to choose from. If I had to pick I’d have to say the one with Richie running around the burning furniture in a mexican costume, or maybe the one with Richie in the jeep in Auckland, or Richie in Buenos Aires with the statue of Diego Maradona. Its a close call really.

ps. the one of Richie in Colonia doing the mamma corra impression is pretty good too though I think you can see James & Quene ( who are they anyways they keep appearing in this blog??!! ) which kinda ruins it for me ;).

  13. admin 27 April 2007 at 7:18 am #

Well, you have to pick two..

    Let’s see..
    this one…..
    http://blogs.bootsnall.com/JamesM/wp-content/uploads/2006/03/IMG_5276.jpg

    Is it this one??
    http://blogs.bootsnall.com/JamesM/wp-content/uploads/2006/03/IMG_5409.jpg

    or this one
    http://blogs.bootsnall.com/JamesM/wp-content/uploads/2006/03/IMG_5418.jpg

    and then you have:
    http://blogs.bootsnall.com/JamesM/wp-content/uploads/2007/02/SA400445.JPG

    and this.
    http://blogs.bootsnall.com/JamesM/wp-content/uploads/2007/03/viaje%20026.jpg

    Well, and the winner is
Richie running around the burning furniture in a mexican costume. 🙂

No doub about it…!!! hahahha.. crazy days..!!

Look Richie you can pick two of the best, but only one of them can be a Richie/Ricardo photo!

  17. admin 1 May 2007 at 4:59 am #

    Planes?

  18. admin 1 May 2007 at 5:38 am #

    Don Ricardo Montoya,

That place was deadly..! El Calafate in Patagonia.
Thinking to comeback to Europe (Madrid or Dublin we don’t know yet) the end of June. Are u going to go back to Dublin in August?
Mel, James sis is coming to BsAs around the 13th June, for Yayoms’s birthday.

How’s the craig in Melbourne? we haven’t heard of any mexican party or blanquet Men… Are there any mexicans in Melbourne?
The Maori Warrior was nearly finished when I decide to change some parts of the painting so back to square 78.
Doing the Sydney Opera House and nearly finished a Terracota Warrior..I want to do al least 8 more… one for each countrie.

And we are asking everybody for favourites to start printing them here … coz is cheaper.

    Chao boludo.

Hey this is the Tongoriro one that impressed me the most and made me think you were actually on the moon!

I also loved your post and pics from Pingyao in China – I think because we didnt get to see this part of China – as we were on a whistle-stop tour only. http://blogs.bootsnall.com/JamesM/uploads/old_cyclist_pingyao.JPG was quite an evocative pic.

Now, I must get back to work 🙁 You’ll be pleased to know the sun is blazing down here, though it IS only around 15 degrees!! Anyway so maybe see ye soon…..

  21. admin 1 May 2007 at 9:25 pm #

    Hi Mairead,
That was some experience crossing Tongariro. We had that sensation of being on another planet, in Uyuni we felt that as well, like we were on Mars, if I knew it was like that I would have prepared some spaceman costumes, just for the fun of it…

Are you working today?? Here everywhere is closed and there is a march along the 9 de Julio Avenue.
Tomorrow fingers crossed I will start working in an english style pub.. so I can earn some “plata” , the way argentinians survive the multiple economic and political crisis they had is doing “trueque”, bit like bartering, like me now, painting my teachers house for painting classes. Classic..!!
And for another teacher I will paint 3 windows for Clown classes. ..Deadly!!

    Hugs,

    Hey Guys,
No mexicans or blanket man to speak of just yet though there is this dude. “The SpaceMan” or “Sonic Manipulator”, he rocks the heavens. Basically its some dude in his 40s busking in a space suit going bananas quite funny and entertaining. Check out the link

check out the photo at the very bottom, its where I get my tram home every day and its one of his usual haunts.

Still planning on heading home around then. My first niece/nephew is due to arrive on July 31st, handing cause its near a bank holiday weekend. Pretty considerate of the little dude/dudette if ya think about it.

    So , you dont know if it’s a dude/ or dudette..eh?
I bet you can’t wait to bring him or her for a pint.

So hows the music of the Sonic Spaceman??  Have you hear him playing on the streets??
