James & Quene travelling around the World

After a long flight (13hrs) from Buenos Aires to Madrid, one of the most comfortable flights we’ve had, with Air Europa, we got seats right beside the exit with tons of leg room! We arrived to a great welcome in Madrid airport.
Well we’re finally home! Almost, well Quene is but a couple thousand miles more to go until the trip is officially over 🙁 So we’re still travelling, and keeping the blog alive!

Esp: Despues de 13 horas de vuelo desde Buenos Aires, en uno de los viajes mas cómodos de estos 20 meses viajando ya que teníamos espacio para estirar las pieeeenas, llegamos a Madrid, a mi casita, aunque el viaje se acabará oficialmente en Dublin, y con la sensación de que todo fue un sueño. (menos mal que está este blog como prueba)
Lo más bonito fue la bienvenida del aeropuerto. 🙂

Here’s a few pics of Madrid, and for you in Dublin, remember Madrid is only a couple of hours away and well worth the trip, if even just for a nice weekend away, there’s plenty to see and do!

In Quene’s neighbourhood is the famous Parque del Buen Retiro, a great place to get away form the hustle and bustle of town, and perfect for seeking shade from the mid 40s degree heat often experienced the end of July beginning of August, luckily this summer has been very mild (so far!) with temperatures around 30-35’C! A week after we left BA it snowed there, the first time in 89 years, I tell ya we were glad to be back in Madrid! After the Retiro another nice place to sit back and peoplewatch is the huge Plaza Mayor, there’s me and Quene, with her sis Blanca, her son Elio and friend Luz Estela… Quene and Elio are chewing on a calamares sandwich, mmmm! Tough on the teeth though!

Esp: Si hay algún lugar que estando lejos me despierta la morriña, este es el Retiro, porque ha sido durante toda mi vida mi segunda casa, mi jardin, el lugar de mil historias y mil recuerdos, y estaba precioso con todo lo que llovió aparentemente el mes anterior, ahora la temperatura está siendo increible unos 30 graditos…que bien!. En la tercera foto comiendo un bocata de calamares en la Plaza Mayor con Luz Estela, Blanca, Elio y James, y por ultimo la tipica foto de la Plaza Mayor anocheciendo.

What better to do on a Saturday night than go have some cañas and tapas, before hitting the town. Close to Quene’s house is Alarcia bar, where they serve up tapas of prawns and other seafood, along with your caña (mini beer!), yuuuuummmmmmyyyyyyy!!!!!!!! After tapas we met up with Quene’s friends for a night on the town! Returning home around 5am, we left the girls as they were going into another bar, we had to get up early the next day for a trip up to the mountains! We were very tempted to go in just for one last drink, but we were good!

Esp: Ayyyy! como hemos echado de menos esas cañitas y las tapas, asi había que ponerse al dia con las tradiciones y probar las gambas entre otros manjares de Alarcia, en la Plaza de Salvador Dalí y ver a las coleguis , salir de marcha y volver con el alba. Al dia siguiente nos fuimos a andar por las montañas 12Km… para curar la resaca..aaaaaggghh.

Early the next day, 9am to be precise, we met up with Cris and Gema, friends from Dublin for a trip up to the Navacerrada mountains, about an hours drive out of town. Just outside the village of Rascafria is a trail that follows a small stream up into the Cataratas del Purgatorio (or Purgatory Falls!) not sure where the name comes from, but there were plenty of pools along the way, great for a nice refreshing dip to cool down.

Esp: A una hora de la ciudad esta la Sierra de Madrid y aprovechamos para limpiar los pulmones e ir a conocer Rascafria y su impresionante paisaje, en la foto las cataratas del Purgatorio con Cris y Gema, incluso nos atrevimos a bañarnos en las gélidas aguas.

Some more sights around Madrid – the Palacio del Oriente, not the residence of the royal family, which is the palacio zarzuela (thanks Blanca!) then there’s the town hall in Puerta del Sol, soon to be the home of the central post office. A very typical Madrileño bar in the Santa Ana part of town, some amazing tiled facades to be seen. And finally a trip to the Museo del Jamon (Ham Museum), a chain of bars that specialise in, well you guessed, ham, cured ham as the Spaniards love, this was one of my first regular haunts when I first came to Madrid, you get a ham and cheese baguette here for €2.00 and a glass of beer for €0.80!

Esp: Después de tantos años viviendo en Dublin, nos fuimos a visitar como un par de guiris mas a los lugares mas visitados de la capi, el impresionante Palacio de Oriente, que no es la residencia de los Reyes, ellos viven en el palacio la zarzuela, la Puerta del Sol (para los que nos leais desde lejos, desde donde se celebra el fin de año tomando las 12 uvas al son de las campanas y donde está el Km 0. Y uno de los muchos bares de Santa Ana (Guirilandia O Gringolandia como se llama a esta zona), en la última , James en el Museo del Jamón, probando ese manjar ibérico que tanto se echa de menos cuando vives lejos.

Esp: Muchas cosas quedan por enseñaros , como el especial San Fermin que seguirá a este post, aunque sólo estuvimos un dia… estuvimos y eso es lo que importa.

By the way, we finally booked our flight back to Dublin, the 11th August, seeing as the weather is so bad there, it would be a shame to waste all this sunshine here by returning earlier, hehehe, but we hope to bring some sun with us, we hear the weather’s been terrible all Summer, poor things…!

Esp: Por cierto ya tenemos el billete para Dublin volamos el 11 de Agosto, después de que nos han contado que lleva lloviendo en Irlanda durante 6 semanas, no nos da muchas ganas de volver, a ver si nos llevamos un poco de sol…lo prometemos!!!
