Fraser Island, Queensland

Wow, Fraser Island is a paradise island just off the coast from Hervey Bay, Queensland. It’s apparently the worlds largest sand island, i.e. made up entirely of sand, no clay or rocks, and it’s also a World Heritage park. It measures 120km long and 25km wide. Here’s a view of the western beach, also known as 70 Mile Beach, and yes, it’s 70 miles (120km) long!!!

The wreck of the Maheno, a luxurious liner built in 1904, converted into a WW1 hospital ship, which was abandoned after it began to take on water while being towed to Japan in 1935.

We decided to take to the skies for some amazing views over the island’s rainforests. We found out that light aircraft, like the one we flew in, is not Quene’s preferred method of transport, she spent most of the time looking into a sick bag! It was a bit bumpier than a jet!

This one of the magnificent lakes you can enjoy in Fraser Island we felt like Yann Arthus-Bertrand, for 30m ..

Some plantlife is unique to the island, such as these giant ferns:

Esp: Muchas de las plantas y pajaros en esta is la son unicos .. estos helechos gigantes compartieron su tiempo con los dinosaurios… no es broma.!

For all you ladies, this is all the fashion in the bush, ranger style!

Eli Creek, an amazingly clear freshwater creek flowing out onto the beach from inland, in this photo it looks like Quene is just standing in the sand but she is in fact in about 30cm of clear fresh water

Beware the dingos, here on the island they are the purest breed found in Australia, due to their isolation, and also the most dangerous, there have been several stories of peoplr, and kids being mauled even killed by dingos. Rangers say that’s due to the fact that people staying on the resort sometimes feed the animals, so when they get very hungry they could end up attacking a human who they see has food, but won’t share!!!! The photo of the Dingo was taken near Uluru.. that one was a girl and she was sweeter more than dangerous ..! But in Fraser do not do this!!

IMG_4832.jpg IMG_4229.jpg
Beautiful Lake McKenzie, a freshwater lake in the centre of the island. It really looks like some tropical island, well it is tropical!!! You keep forgetting that! But when you jump into this lake, you keep thinking it’s the sea coz it’s so blue, and there’s sand everywhere, but you can drink this water it’s so clean and fresh!

Enjoy the photos, and don’t forget to leave a comment if you are visiting!

Que disfruteis de las fotos…como siempre !!

Cheerio,

James & Quene

    Hello..!
We can’t believe it either…And our adventure in Australia is nearly over.. tonight is the last night we will sleep in the campervan.. Today we are in Nelson bay in Port Stephens .. Nice spot if you like to see dolphins.
This evening after we leave the campervan we will do a tour in the wine valleys to check if the Australian wine is better or not to the Spanish one 😉 .

Mon, I hope one day you have the chance to visit Australia, people here is really nice , they talk to you in no time…very friendly
Also ..we never so so many animals in our entire life.. the beautiful ones and the little creatures..
One of the reasons of this big trip was to find the next spot to life… Australia has a lot of points now.. the weather , the wildlife, the style of life more sports in the sun .. I (Quene) wouldn’t get the visa easily (as Spain is not part of the commonwealth or english speaking country) , but we can try at some point..

We can’t wait for NZ to see how is like.. the only thing we are sad as well is because the summer is over in the South Hemisfere…! and we like the sun.
As soon as we find another internet cafe with USB ports we will do the next post ..
    With surf champions and all…!
    See yas!!

    Q&J

    Hello Bigbro + Ann..
The campervan was $2000 for 4 weeks .. + petrol.. around $300 .. we were calculating and is as expensive as travelling on the bus and then sleeping in hostals .. but with this you are free to come and go and you don’t need to unpack your bags and carry the bags everysingle day..
It has fridge, sink and lots of space , cooker (you can save a bit if you cook) ..

I recomend you should check prices ..it will be beautiful from Seattle to Vancouver..I hope you can post a comment form there so we have more flags in the comments .. 🙂
Say hello to the rest of the family… !!

    See yas!

    Hi Guys,

Looking forward to seeing you tomorrow and hearing all about your trip, although I have been reading about it all(green with envy). We are thinking of doing the campervan thing next year with the boys so look forward to getting some tips off you. Well James, isn’t the Aussie wine better then anywhere else on earth!! Let me know if you need help with the Visa for Oz we are aussie citizens now so might to able to sponsor you or something!! We could say Christina is our nanny and James is our gardener(or the other way round)!!

    Janis,
The boys are great and Jack still talks about Leon as we still have his hat! He keeps checking his height in Aarons room and wants to be as tall as his “irish cousin”. Sorry to hear about the snow – hate that! Well, better go wash the sand off my toes! See ya soon.

    Nadine xx

    Hi Everyone,

Happy Women’s Day to all you lovely ladies out there!

Thanks guys for all the advice on getting visas sorted out!!!!! No it’s not a tough one to solve 😉

    Jan,
we can’t believe it either, getting so close to the 6month half-way mark, don’t even want to think about it! Cristina seems to go mad looking at those men in short shorts!!! Have to get me a few pairs. Ann, you want a few pairs for Colm????
And by the way if I keep up surfing for while in NZ, I too could end up with a body like the pros! It really is a tough sport, after the first 2 lessons you can feel every muscle!!!

Rough dates for the remainder of the trip is:
    New Zealand March 10th – May 2nd
    Chile/Argentina – May 2nd – early June,
    Peru/Bolivia – June/July
    Chile/Argentina/Brazil – August/September

    Hi Rebecca,
yea, heard you’re a big TV star now, can’t wait to see the video! Wow! Congrats! And congrats too for Minnie, are you going to keep any of the pups??? Probably have to get a house with a bigger garden to hold them all! Hugs and kisses to you mam dad and antoinette! Get her to post a comment too!

    Hi Col n Ann,
Yea that was a rough flight, felt like the plane was going to drop out of the sky at any moment with all the imaginary bumps we hit!!! Fraser island is beautiful, crystal clear water and lots of sandy beaches! Ah sure in a few years in Oz, I’d be competing with Kelly Slater (see next post) in the Surfing Championships and Quene will be Coaching the national basketball team!!! Bet that was a blast watching Antoinette and Rebecca!

    Hey Nadine,
the campervan thing was a blast, you’ll love it, and the kids just as much! As for the wine, mmm they do have some great wines here, but as for my favourite (Rioja) Spain still comes out tops, sorry! Cristina would make a great nanny for the boys, she’ll make great little artists out of them, you’d have the whole house hand painted in cool funky designs, in marker to start off, til they graduate on to spray cans in their young teens, and then onto oil paints, hahahahaaaaa!!!! Dunno how good I’d be with the garden in that heat!!!! Just lots of palm trees for the shade, a nice little pool, with built in bar of course!

Only 3 days left in Australia, so we’re working on our last post from Australia, so sad, sniff sniff… 🙁
