Robben Island

September 1st, 2005

Today was one of those days that you don’t only enjoy but feel truly privileged to have experienced.

We visited Robben Island today.

Robben Island is where Nelson Mandela and most of the political prisoners from the African National Congress (ANC) the Pan African Congress (PAC) and many of the smaller political parties, all enemies of the state of Apartheid, were incarcerated. Mandela spent eighteen years on this island in a tiny solitary cell.

Fish, Fish and More Fish

September 1st, 2005

In our quest to see every animal in Africa, our big stop of the day was the Two Oceans Aquarium. Apparently they were inspired to name the place after the two oceans, Indian and Atlantic that meet here in Cape Town. Maybe they just stole the idea from our state of Minnesota that names it’s lakes; “Big Lake”, “ Small Lake” “Round Lake.” Who knows?

Tuxedo Anyone?

September 1st, 2005

After spending the last few days inside we all had a bit of cabin fever, so when Math lessons were finished we all piled into our trusty Mazda and took off over the mountain to see some men in tuxedos: the penguins.

Pull Up, Pull Up. Or We are Going to Crash!

September 1st, 2005

After assuring the parents at home that we were not going to stunt our children’s academic growth by teaching them ourselves we had some work to do. Day #2 needed to go much better than Day #1.

We decided the problem with yesterday had to be that they went off on their own and just got frustrated. We hoped we were right. Today we worked with them and didn’t let them go on their own. We cruised through the entire lesson in 1 hour. Much better than the six it took yesterday. Mission accomplished.

Class Had Begun

September 1st, 2005

One of the best parts of our year traveling is going to be the opportunity to teach the children ourselves. We can self pace their curriculum and teach to their level. Our main goals are to push them ahead of their peers in math, so that when they get to their new school next year they can concentrate more fully on their other subjects. Math is something Carl and I feel fairly comfortable teaching. How hard can it be? We’ve got the workbook and we can read.

Tranquility Falls

August 30th, 2005

On our first day in The Manor Cottage, Chris told us about a 25 minute hike up the mountain near our home to a waterfall. It sounded much more interesting than work, so the kids and I headed up to explore.

So Far South, It’s COLD!

August 30th, 2005

Today we are headed to Cape Town. It is where we plan on calling home for the next month or so. Neither Carl nor I have ever been to the Cape before, we both hope we like it. The nice thing about remaining flexible in our plans, is we can change them if things don’t work out like we expect.

Making Friends Anywhere & Everywhere

August 30th, 2005

The best part of traveling is meeting people along the way. Hostels provide a great way to meet other travelers. Everyone is of the same mindset in the “backpackers”. They want to see a lot and travel for a long time. People staying in these backpackers are not interested in luxurious accommodations; they spend their money on experiences instead. Canoeing, rappelling, bike tours, jumping off cliffs, swimming with sharks, and any and all other risky endeavors you can imagine. We have generally enjoyed this environment, but it is always nice to spend the night in a ‘normal’ home and have a great meal.

Kruger – The South

August 23rd, 2005

The southern part of the park is closer to Johannesburg has better highways and seems to have more animals. Unfortunately this all means there are more, much more, people. Actually most visitors to the park never get as far north as Olifants, which for us was three days drive south from where we started. We are pleased we started up north because after a week in the wild, people just plain bugged us.

Kruger – The Center

August 23rd, 2005

Time to move to a new lodge. We were up again before the sun and packed all of our things into our mighty Opel Zafira. Sunrise is an amazing time for photography and we were ready to capture some images. Unfortunately few, if any, of our mornings were clear enough to take advantage of sunrise.
