Packages, Portobello Road, and Kinky Boots

Wednesday, October 12th, 2005

It came it came!!! The first instalment of what I hope will be very many packages full of good ol’ American TV DVDs has finally arrived! I went to the post office this morning on my way to work to pick up my package and I nearly had to bribe the guy to give it to me as the post office portion of the store didn’t technically open until 9:00, but he was really nice and gave it to me anyway. I didn’t have time to make it home to drop it off, so it took a ride on the train with me and is now sitting here on my desk at work. I haven’t opened it yet, but I saw on the customs form that there is peanut butter inside…Mom, I love you! It was nice to get a package and see my mom’s handwriting on the outside, and it even reminds me of Dad as it is packed up in a box that some of his fishing shoes came in.

Monkey!

Thursday, October 6th, 2005

Life is going pretty well for me lately, if I do say so. My job is going well, I now have a TV at my house, and so far this morning I’ve had two giant cups of coffee and a mug of tea. I’m freakin’ wired.

My new job is pretty cool. I’ve been working at Which? magazine for a little over a week now, and it’s been really fantastic. I’m in love with the location—right around the corner from Regent’s Park and a twelve-minute walk to Oxford Street shopping, which I’ve already taken advantage of during a lunch break last week (and I have a lovely black velvet jacket to show for it). The people here are fun and we have a big window looking out onto a tree-filled courtyard between buildings. Technically, I’m a copywriter; I work on the Which? Internet site, doing design-related stuff and yesterday we started doing more editorial stuff. My resume is very excited about that, let me tell you. I’m just happy that it’s steady work, at least until the end of November. Having worked on Web projects before, though, I’m pretty much counting on this thing running past schedule. Fingers crossed.

Bye bye Jimbo

Everyone needs friends in their lives, but sometimes you need friends in your lives. I just can't say what I would have done if I hadn't had my friend, Jim, here in London to help me out over the past ... [Continue reading this entry]

From my desk looking out onto the Thames

Okay, so the desk isn't mine and I'm only here for half a day, but the view is pretty darn amazing anyway. Another day, another job. Today finds me working for a charity called Wateraid, a group that works to ... [Continue reading this entry]

Homeless, but not quite jobless

Pip pip, and all that

Monday, September 12th, 2005
While the longest schlep has come to an end, a new era of mini-schleps has begun. The location has changed, but the schlepping remains the same. I'm once again back in the UK. This time I'm not studying, I'm not visiting, ... [Continue reading this entry]

Home again

Monday, August 15th, 2005
As the title suggests, I'm back home again. And the honeymoon period was short-lived. I did get the homecooked meal I had requested when I came home (Hamburger Helper with green peas and biscuits...mmm), but that was about all the ... [Continue reading this entry]

Thinking of London

Saturday, July 9th, 2005
I just want to start off by saying how sad the news of the London bombings was. We were still at the house in Austria when we heard, and we sat in front of the TV for hours as news ... [Continue reading this entry]
