August 08, 2004Sydney: Bondi
City to Surf is an annual run that starts off in Sydney centre and goes through various suburbs before finishing at Bondi Beach. It took place on a Sunday - my day off - and so I decided to head over there. I intended to get to Bondi in time to see the runners cross the line and have a look at the tents that had been set up. After cocktails the night before, I got going late, and was heading to the bus stop when I saw an elderly man ahead of me trip over a recycle bin on the pavement. I went over to help and ended up calling an ambulance and waiting with him, his neighbour and a passing motorist who'd also stopped. He was all right, but shaken and had a badly grazed leg, and wasn't sure whether he'd hit his head. When I finally got to Bondi - after taking three busses - the race was over and people were packing up. But I got to see the beach and the surfers - though it was a whole lot colder than it looks in the photos! |
