June 13, 2004Heathrow
At the airport, a big TV was showing the Euro 2004 England vs. France match in a departure lounge. The sound was down really low, so everyone had to be quiet to hear what was going on. I sat between a couple of Irishmen, whose accents were so strong I thought they were speaking another language at first. They told me they were heading off to Bangkok for three weeks. Despite the bing-bong of the tannoy announcements, and people getting up to catch their flights, there was a good atmosphere. I left just after half-time to get my plane and as we all waited in the tunnel to board someone got a phone call from a friend, saying that England were still 1 up with 3 minutes to go. We joked about the chances of France scoring, and it wasn't until a few days later that I found out they had won. |
