November 07, 2004Amritsa
Just boarded yet another night train heading for Delhi. I spent just one night and one day in Amritsa and I think thats enough. The Sikh Golden Temple is really all there is of interest in the town. That and a lot of GREAT facial hair! Every man seems to have a huge beard, or a whopper of a handle bar moustaches. I traveled down to Amristsa with and English Guy I met in McLeod Ganj. The two of us stayed the night in the Dormitories within the Golden Temple complex. It’s a strange set up but for some reason the Sikhs provide free accommodation and free food to visitors. Obviously a donation is expected on departure, but even so it makes this place a pretty cheap stop over. The Golden Temple is quite Grand (If a little BLING BLING!!), and it was really interesting to see Sikhs on their pilgrimage to their religions holiest place. However I am tiring of religion a little bit now and looking forward to a change. Eating in the temple was also great. They feed 30 thousand people a day. Me twice! Everyone sits in long lines cross legged on the floor and some guy walks up and down chanting something. Then food arrives, a never ending supply of Rice Dahl, and Chapatti. Fantastic.. Its like an all you can eat but costs nothing.. My next trip involves a train to Delhi, where I will get a connecting train to a place called Ajmer, where I will get a connecting bus to Pushkar.. (24 hours in total.. GREAT!!) Once in pushkar I intend to chill for while.. On the train back to Delhi the landscape is bland, and I have little to amuse myself with. No company as such and nothing to do but read (I’m averaging a book a week.. Not bad for someone who doesn’t read much). When not reading I spend the rest of the time staring aimlessly out of the window at the flat landscape of fields, villages, and asbestos factories that line the railway line. I’m tired but cant sleep and am starting to crave a social life. A good night out with like minded people would go down a treat right now. Comments
