Kashmir

Delhi has changed alot, no more cows downtown, a metro so moving around is cheap and easy. It is still wild for traffic and dirty, noisy, 14 million people packed together, did I mention 40+C, spicy food, many people trying to sell trips, etc. and on top of that a bomb went off by the high court. The kids describe it as: Interesting, very different, stinky, polluted, dirty, messy, no order, almost no rules compared to Canada, lots of people, good movies!
We are in Kashmir for a few days. It is supposedly “Paradise on Earth”, maybe for India, but certainly not for us!! Alex says that if this is paradise then he doesn’t want to go after he dies! At least it is a lot cooler here, even had winter hat on yesterday when we went to their ski hill ”Gulmarg “. Looks like it would be good skiing, there was still a lot of snow left, especially on the peak up to 14,000 ft. It was quite difficult to get away from all the “guides” offering services, but it is nice to see all the Indian tourists getting bugged just like us, or more! The military presence is quite amazing. Tanks, guns, army personnel all over. Every bridge seems to be protected by the army. So far we feel very safe, but we are sticking to the tourist areas, even with that we get stopped by the police very ofter. We are staying on a houseboat in Lake Dal in Srinagar. Generally we can find a bit of peace on the houseboat .. but carpet sellers, etc can find us anyway!
We are heading to Daremsela tomorrow. The roads are really awful (generally paved, but dangerous traffic, animals, rocks, etc, and it can be quite scary. We have hired a car for 8 days and will go back to Amaristar, then train to Delhi. Next we plan to visit around Agra – Tag mahal, and some places around. It has been 40C in Delhi area (45C there today so nice to be here) and I find I have a shorter temper (poor kids)! And not much energy.
Hugs to all,
Heather, Andre, Heidi, Alex
