The Chinese are a very shrewd & commerically-minded people. There is a huge difference between Western prices and Chinese prices. Chinese have much more knowledge of the difference between Western and Chinese prices than Westerners do. It is easy for Westerners to pay Western prices and Chinese have a powerful incentive to induce Westerners to pay those prices rather than Chinese prices. So the traveler who hopes to benefit from Chinese prices has a big challenge to learn what those prices are and to be constantly alert to avoid being duped into paying more. Awareness of prices & barter, I decided, was an important part of learning about Chinese culture and about the interface between Chinese and Western societies.

Although bicycles are still common, automobiles and buses are the prominent form of traffic.
