September 26, 2005Indonesia Recap
We can hardly say that we went to "Indonesia" since all we saw was a lot of Bali, a tiny bit of Lombok and a lot of unidentified islands along the way to Komodo. Bali was a bit of a disappointment at first. It is extremely touristy and coming from Malaysia where tourists were less common, we encountered a little bit of culture shock. Once we got away from the crowds a little and caught glimpses of the heart and soul of the island, we learned why travelers have always loved Bali. Here's our Indonesian best/worst list: Best hotel: Tie between Coral View Villas in Amed ($25) and Flashback's in Sanur ($17.55). Worst hotel: The Mandara Beach Bungalows in Nusa Lembongan wasn't bad, it just wasn't as nice as any of the other places we stayed. 24 hour electricity and reliable running water would have been nice there. Favorite meal: Musaman Curry, Jasmine Kitchen in Lovina (Amie)/Mahi Mahi BBQ, Wawa Wewe II in Amed (Pearse) Least favorite meal: Pearse's raw chicken salad in Amed turned all of our stomachs Top 5 experiences: Seeing the Komodo dragons, diving the Liberty Wreck, Swimming in the Coral View's pool, relaxing at Flashback's and enjoying Cathay Pacific's business class lounge at the Bali airport - what a way to end the trip! Least favorite experiences: Drivers constantly accosting us - some of them 4 times in one day (the same driver) looking to drive us somewhere, anywhere. And see above under "least favorite meal."
