Quick note

No, we haven't gotten around yet to finishing the blog yet. Yes, it's all my fault. It's funny how the daily grind of work and everything else we have to do just zaps all the energy from me.

But I did want to share some good news with everyone - we found Beer Lao in Portland! We were having dinner with our good friend Shauna the other evening at Esan's Thai Restaurant in NW and took a peek at the beer selection. Pearse's eyes nearly popped out of his head when he saw they had Beer Lao. It's not quite the deal it was in Lao but it's definitely a taste for sore tastebuds. Surprisingly, Pearse isn't quite the cheapskate here as he was in Asia: he paid $7.50 for two 330 ml bottles. And he thought they were well worth it.

my wife and I are getting ready to embark on a 12 month trip RTW. We are also from PDX and would love to get a chance to pick your brains if you are willing! We plan on leaving in mid sept.

I do have one BIG question. How much do you two budget for your trip and would you consider it budget, comfortable or extravagent? thanks!

Hi Scott! How exciting that you're leaving in just a month. We'd love to have our brains picked :) We've been planning to do a budget entry but it may not be up on the blog before you leave.

Roughly, we budgeted $50 a day with an slush fund of $3000 for those "once in a lifetime opportunities" that sometimes come up, as well as in-country airfare and emergencies. At the end, we came in right at budget and didn't use all of our slush fund.

I would consider our budget to be generous for SEA but not extravagent. We lived like kings in Laos for $30 a day and struggled in in Borneo for $60 a day. We could have spent less and we definitely could have spent more.
