August 15, 2003Trapped in Thurso
Who would have ever thought that Thurso, basically a seaport where the Orkney ferry leaves from, is backpacker heaven? After the last 11 days of moving around and doing stuff the way I wanted to, I finally got stuck doing something I didn't. I had wanted to go from Thurso to Durness, but my Let's Go UK guide had outdated information about a bus from here to there. The bus service they mentioned is no longer in service. Angela (a German girl I met) and I attempted to hitch a ride for 45 minutes with no luck. My only other option was to catch a post bus (a little bus or van that delivers mail and people to remote places) to Tongue (another town) and then connect to Durness. That'll happen tomorrow morning at 9:40am sharp. In the meantime, I checked into the Thurso Youth Club Hostel which had been recommended by Angela. For £8 a night, you get a bed, free breakfast, free laundry (with detergent and fabric softener), free movies, free internet, use of a pool table, and all the video games you could ever hope for. There is nothing a traveler likes to hear more than FREE LAUNDRY services. Plus, Richard the really amazing warden here, just informed me that we can use the public swimming pool and sauna for free as well.... I'm off!!!! Comments
Your commentary is fascinating and I am really enjoying your trip. I feel like I am traveling with you. Hi Claudia's Mum, when i saw the news on telly, i was a bit worried about you. Glad to see that you tided over the blackout. PC, met my big boss yesterday, have to put in my entire three months notice period, the big boss thinks that i have gone stark raving mad and hopes that these three months in the office will help me regain my sanity. (did not dare show him BNA site). cya soon.... u know the downside, i shall not be unemployed when you and ant stop by, but we shall manage to have a blast nonetheless. have fun and enjoy doing the laundry 8-) Posted by: dusty on August 17, 2003 01:47 AMHi Claude Sounds like you are really having a great time. Where the heck are the Orkneys??? Northwestern Scotland? Loved that story about the old man ...did you get a photo of this guy? You are going to be in great shape if you keep up the vigorous life style!!! When do you leave for Wales? You ar going still? I missed the big blackout here...I was in NJ at the time. All I lost was $$$$$$$$$$!!!! Glad all the NY'ers are all right! What a freaky thing to happen... well m' luv, I'm glad that things worked out despite the bus thing not being right. Sounds like things actually worked out far better, really! My tickets, btw, just arrived ;-) Posted by: Ant on August 17, 2003 11:37 PM |
