August 08, 2003Inverness 2
Today I got to meet Dave McPhie's sister, bro in law, and niece, Anne, Jim, and Vicky. They picked me up at the Inverness train station after I caught a brief ride down to Aviemore yesterday on the train. They are all the sweetest people. I hung around doing average day stuff with all of them, which is fine by me. I'm not dying to go do the Culloden Field or do more hokey touristy stuff. No whisky tastings or kilt makers here please. Tonight for dinner we are having the HAGGIS. I can't even tell you whats's in it. Ok, maybe I will. It's random sheep parts all cooked up in a sheep's stomach. It includes organs and other odd bits and pieces. Well, it smells good. Later in the evening, we are heading off for a drive around Loch Ness I think. Should be fun. :) Tomorrow we drive to Aberdeen for an overnight, and then I had out the next day (Monday) to Thurso so I can catch the ferry to Orkney. I should be up there for a few days and I have no idea what the internet connection deal is up there. I could be incommunicado for a few days. Comments
Sounds great to meet another McPhie. We had some excitement here and I will write about it. I love your log: it sounds so interesting and foreign. Hearty haggis! What did you think of "The Haggis"? If I remember correctly, it is horrible! I wonder if they made it for dinner just because you were there.....and really, they never eat it. :) Don't knock all the touristy stuff.. afterall, kilt makers have one main client-> Scottish men! yummy! BTW, there was a big annoucement on MSNBC about a week ago.. there is no Loch Ness Monster. No kidding. Apparently, some scientist did a big, expensive underwater dredging and filming and they found nothing...but just in case, be sure to have your camera ready! Posted by: Stephanie on August 8, 2003 03:07 PMNo Nessie? I dunno - I'd love to see that story. And what are they talking about, big dredging? You could stand the comm tower in London in Loch Ness and it'd be fully covered, the loch is so deep. But maybe they did - something conclusive one way or another is pretty exciting, no matter what. MMmmmm... haggis! The stuff gets a bad rap, you know? I had it a couple of times in Scotland - on Skye and in Stirling - and I thought it was pretty tasty. Wash it down with a pint o' 80, and life rocks. Have fun in Orkney, love. I guess that Haggis is something we all have to try at one point in our lives ;) I forgot the most important part!! They call it the Ogopogo :) Such an endearing and fun to say name. Posted by: Dewbie on August 8, 2003 10:14 PMso joey is forgiven- he bought me a car!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Well, at least you have a car, a job, and some insurance. How much was the car??? What's the deal with Thailand? Did you guys do what I told you? Talk to Nick. I spoke with him yesterday and I told him how to find the cheapies. Posted by: Claudia on August 12, 2003 05:30 AMThe Loch Ness monster is actually a big haggis floating in the lake. Posted by: eeyartee on August 12, 2003 06:32 PMhmmm... I think you've been hitting a bit too much single-malt to have come up with that theory! That would make it nearly a big turd!!! Ick. I've been sampling the whiskey and have been taking a liking to it..... Posted by: Claudia on August 13, 2003 05:29 AMRe the internet connection question for Orkney. All of the UK has free internet connections in their public libraries. Also some of the tourist information centres have them as well, but they charge a fee like 1 pound for 15 minutes, so try the libraries first. Posted by: Barbara on August 18, 2003 12:57 PMBC has more than one "Nessie". Cadbora Bay by Oak Bay, a section of Victoria BC on Vancouver Island, also lays claim to a sea monster. This one is appropriately named "Caddie". Posted by: Barbara on August 18, 2003 12:58 PM |
