Glastonbury

So – I’ve traveled for roughly… 3+5.5 = 8.5ish hours today? (I think travelers are those who enjoy the act of traveling – whether by bus, rail, or plane, whereas tourists are interested in the destinations, rather than the act of getting there.

Or maybe I sat on a bus for too long and am rationilizing. :))

And why? To go see Glastonbury. Was it worth it? Oh my god yes. First of all, the long bus ride (mostly spent waiting to change buses, actually – thank god for my ipod) was very pretty, and I saw a hawk and deer and bunnies. Then – the town itself is SO HIPPY. Every bookstore is a metaphysical expert, the music stores are all world music, and I have never seen so many celtic trinkets, crystals, wiccan crafts, and herbal remedies in my life. The whole town smelled of incence. Grabbed lunch at a cafe that turned out to be some sort of rehab center for people(?) My waitress had downs, and we got to spell ploughmans together. Then I walked through the abbey, which is mostly ruins, but seriously majestic ones. Plus today was gorgeous and perfect for walking around. I saw the thorn tree, that (** – read as supposedly) *sprung from the staff of Joseph of Arimethea*. Saw a badger hole and a fish pond and a duck pond. Saw *Arthur and Guinevere’s graves*. Walked over to the chalice well, which is a world peace garden (super-lovely and calm). Saw the well where Joseph *rinsed the holy grail*. Then I walked up Glastonbury tor, which was about 300 steps or so (520 ft up). I swear – pilgrims were not the devoutly religious, they were the earliest exercize freaks. The tor was very lovely, and you could see up to 20 miles in some directions. It was very gorgeous. And a bagpiper started playing on my way up. AND I could have sworn I heard a bell ring at the top – but I figure that must either be a trick of the wind, or an overactive imagination.

Oh – and as I came down I passed a hippy playing with a giant rainbow pinwheel.

your informatin on the bell ringing at top of the Tor is so weird. Me and me hubby went to the Tor 6/12/07 Rainy misty day and both of us heard a bell at the top of the Tor and not just once 6 minutes later it went again. There is no bell at the top of the Tor!!! This is strange.. We are not hippies by the way! We live in about 40 miles from the Tor and havent been there in ages. I wonder if anyone else has heard these bells

Well, the legend is that the bell is the bell of the isle of Avalon. Supposedly. So who knows? Maybe only special people can hear it?
