James & Quene travelling around the World

Lo sentimos por el retraso del post, estuvimos muy ocupados con buscar un lugar donde vivir, organizarnos un poco, deshacer las mochillas, no veas el gran suspiro que soltaron, las pobrecitas!!! Pués vamos a estar en Buenos Aires un ratito, para recuperar fuerzas, reunir todo el material del viaje y pensar que hacer con el, disfrutar de esta ciudad y ensenaros como esta ciudad se transforma para el verano.

Vamos a aprovechar y os vamos a ensenar nuestro nuevo barrio, y otras cosillas.

ENG: Apologies for it being a while since we posted, we’ve been busy looking for a place to call home for the next few months, finally got to unpack the rucksacks, man you should’ve heard their sigh of relief, been a tough year for them!!! Well we’ve decided to hang on a bit in Buenos Aires, to rest a bit (from travelling, ha, never thought I’d say that!!!! :o). And it’s nice to be in one spot for a while, so we can really appreciate this city, and see what the summer is like here. And also to give you guys a glimpse of life in Buenos Aires.

En un extremo de la Avenida de Mayo está la Plaza de Mayo con la Casa Rosada donde vive y Gobierna el Presidente Nestor Kichner y al otro extremo, a 14 cuadras, unos 1.400 metros para ustedes en casa, se encuentra el Congreso, un imenso edificio como se puede ver en la foto, que ya os enseñaremos en detalle.

ENG: Avenida de Mayo named after the month of May, not the county in the west of Ireland!!! Is a couple of blocks from our gaf. On one end of the Avenue you have the Casa Rosada (Pink House) which is where the government hangs out led by President Nestor Kirchner. On the far end, 14 blocks away, that’s about 1,400 metres to you folks back home, is the imposing Congress, not unlike the White House, but this one’s grey, so you’ve got a pink house on one end and a grey house on the far end…

Esta es La Casa Rosada, Casa de Gobierno de la Argentina y donde casi cada dia hay manifestaciones (cada Jueves desde hace 26 años 3:30h estan las abuelas de Mayo, todavia no hemos ido pero iremos y os lo enseñaremos), la Plaza de Mayo esta siendo modificada para que en el futuro sea peatonal. La foto de la derecha es el Cabildo donde se planeo la independencia de Argentina, que dejo de ser espanola en la misma epoca que Francia invadio Espana.

ENG: This is the Pink House again, seat of the Argentinian Government, and nearly every day the ending point of a street protest. Every Thursday at 3.30, for the last 26 years, the Abuelos de la Plaza de Mayo (Grandmothers of Plaza de Mayo), as they’re now known have been protesting there. They’re going to remodel the entire plaza, so who knows what it will look like in the future! To the right is the Cabildo, the former town hall, where Argentina’s fight for independence from Spanish rule was planned, which also coincided with Spain being invaded by Napoleon…

Av de Mayo, es una de las Av con mas historia de Buenos Aires, los mejores arquitectos se reunieron a finales del siglo XIX para disenar esta calle al estilo de Paris, muy importante en la historia de la ciudad y del pais, por ejemplo en la Guerra Civil Espanola, inmigrantes espanoles de uno y otro bando hacian guerrillas en la calle, dividiendo la calle en dos literalmente. El famoso Cafe Tortoni donde fue testigo de visitas tan ilustres como el mismo Einstein, Borges, Garcia Lorca, siempre hay una interminable cola para entrar, entrar alli es como retroceder en el tiempo… El otro dia fue el dia Mundial de sida, vimos un grupo de gente andando por la calle con un gigante lazo rojo.

ENG: Avenida de Mayo is one of Buenos Aires’ most historic streets. Towards the end of the 19th century many of the world’s finest architects got together to design this street in a Parisian style. Then during the Spanish civil war was home to many Spanish immigrants from both sides, even bringing the war to Buenos Aires with gangs fighting each other in the street. There’s the famous Cafe Tortoni, host to some of the greats, Einstein, Borges, Garcia Lorca. There’s always a mad queue to get in… There’s the statue above the old press building, now a Cultural Museum. Just the other day was World Aids Day, a group of people walked along the street with a giant red ribbon.

Hay mucho arte por aquí, come se vea en la pared gigante, con imagenes de la ciudad. Tenía la suerte de participar en un concurso de pintura organizado por una tienda de artes plasticas y varias instituciones. Pinté la estatua de la casa de la cultura (ve arriba), o la representante de la prensa con la luz en una mano y las noticias en la otra, la Avenida se corto al trafico mas tarde por la fiesta del dia del orgullo gay , asi que aprovechamos para hacernos una fotillo en todo el centro de la carretera, normalmente abarrotada de coches y colectivos…

ENG: There’s lots art all around, as you can see on this huge wall with city-scape mural!!! Quene, eager to get back into painting, got to take part in a competition where the theme was Avenida de Mayo, and the painting had to be done on the street itself. She painted the estatue of the Cultural museum (see photo above). They closed the street in the afternoon, to make way for the Gay Pride Parade, so with the street clear of traffic, we edcided to take a few pics!!!

….Y nada mas llegar nos enteramos del Festival Bue’06, donde tocaban Daft Punk , The Yeah Yeah Yeahs y Amparanioa, el dia anterion Patty Smith y The Beastie Boys, solo fuimos un dia…La foto en el concierto de Daft Punk, un increible espectaculo de luz fue muy bueno, nos lo pasamos genial y karen O de The Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

ENG: Just when we got here was the mini festival season, lots of gigs going on, in the space of 2 weeks!!! We got to go to Bue Festival, and got to see Daft Punk, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and Amparanoia, the previous day Patti SMith played along with the Beasty Boys… The pics are of Daft Punk in their cool pyramid of light, amasing lighting effects. And there’s Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs strutting her stuff on the stage! We had a great time!!! Great listening to Around the World, might make that the official track of the trip!!!

Y nos despedimos con una foto de Maradona muy jovencito siendo espachurrado por alguien demasiado carinoso, en la zona de San Telmo hay muchas tiendas de antiguedades, bares y restaurantes muestran fotos antiguas, sobre todo de Gardel y Maradona, dos dioses aqui.

ENG: We leave you with a picture of the unofficial eternal king of Argentina in his younger days, Maradona, being squeezed to bits by some tv or radio presenter.

Ya sabemos que el blog igual no va a ser tan exotico, pero como sigue siendo un blog, vamos a continuar subiendo fotos de Buenos Aires, y los cosas que vemos aqui, para compartir con ustedes la vida Porteña, y como es verano iremos visitando la región tambien!

Well, guess the blog’s not going to be as exotic as before, but as it’s a blog, we’ll keep blogging, letting you in on what we get up to in Buenos Aires, and as it’s summer, we’ll be out exploring the region too!
