Davos

Friday, September 29th, 2006

Did I mention Zurich smells of money? That’s even more apparent in Davos, host of the annual World Economic Forum where competition seems to be a big focus. Kind of old world, isn’t it? How about focussing on creativity instead? Much more future-oriented, I think. But that’s me.

Davos is not my fave Alpine village, then - but I stayed for too short a time to be fair about it.

An interesting thing about Davos is that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle stayed here for a while, which reminded me of that fateful episode where Sherlock Holmes succumbed to the evil professor Moriarty and finally kicked it in the Reichenbach Falls. Now, those falls are in the Bernese Oberland, and not here - but perhaps this area served as inspiration for part of the story?

St Moritz in September

Thursday, September 28th, 2006

Tall mountains, houses perched on improbable ridges, lovely lake (St Moritzsee) and fresh mountain air. That’s the upside. The downside? Heavy-duty marketing of St Moritz as prestigious, visited by movie stars and minor royals, trying to attract big names and big shoppers, even copyrighting the name St Moritz (?)

St Moritz is divided in two: The upper Dorf and the lower Bad. The two are connected by a series of escalators (!) so I suppose St Moritz must get its share of lazy tourists. Here for Prada and Patek Philippe rather than the skiing. Claudia Schiffer and Pierce Brosnan hang out here from time to time. I’m sure they are fit enough to walk, though.

Great things to do in St Moritz in September:

1) Walk around the gorgeous St Moritzsee. Try to overlook the ugly concrete blocks of flats in Bad (what can those architects have been thinking?) and focus instead on the surrounding countryside and mountains.

2) Have a look at the quirky old-world Hotel Waldhaus am See and imagine the place say, 100 years ago - people in Edwardian costume strolling lazily around, picknicing by the lake, happily chatting, resting and taking the baths. Very belle époque.

3) Try a Nusstorte (local nut cake - delicious).

4) Take the Bergbahn up to Corviglia and the cable car on up to Piz Nair. At 3 057 m, walk up to the top and just breathe! Go back down to the Panorama restaurant, get a cup of tea and sit and enjoy the view. Walk back down the mountain and look for the cute marmots along the mountainside.

5) OK then - try out those escalators. They end at a terrace overlooking the lake. And just in case the two short stairways down from the terrace are too much, there is a lift down to the pavement.

This is off-season. Many resorts and shops are closed - but everything will be back in business on 5 December at noon, including flashy Badrutt’s Palace. Now you know.

Summing up, here’s my quick take on St Moritz:
The town - eeeh…..
The setting - stunning

Worth it? Yeah - I would say so.

Zurich - a night on the town

St Moritz - coming up

Tuesday, September 26th, 2006
18 September 2006 I head for Switzerland day after tomorrow - for the thirteenth time or something. First time in St Moritz, though. And I’ve been wanting to see this city (town? village?… I’ll let you know) since I was 16 (remembering ... [Continue reading this entry]

Thoughts on Tonga

Tuesday, September 26th, 2006
12 September 2006 I read in a Sydney Morning Herald online-article today that King Taufa’ahau Tupou IV, King of Tonga, died yesterday. Don’t know what it is about people dying and me remembering places – but… I was reminded of ... [Continue reading this entry]

Thinking of Uzbekistan

Tuesday, September 26th, 2006
7 September 2006 I was just now submitting a Kiev story to BnA, and was reminded of that trip. And Uzbekistan came to mind. Why? Well, as I was waiting in transit at Riga airport, I noticed an Ilyushin from Uzbekistan ... [Continue reading this entry]

Reminiscing about the Croc man

Tuesday, September 26th, 2006
5 September 2006 This was going to be about Girona, but the news about the Crocodile Hunter made me want to reminisce about another trip instead. Sad that such a presence, such energy, just has stopped being around. I was living ... [Continue reading this entry]

Carcassonne and Time Travel

Monday, September 25th, 2006
31 August 2006 I arrived by train in Carcassonne on Thursday. Nothing like hopping off a train in a new city, not knowing what’s around the corner. And around the corner here was La Cité, a perfectly preserved, living ... [Continue reading this entry]

Carcassonne next

30 August 2006 Earlier this summer, I read Labyrinth by Kate Mosse (that’s not Kate Moss - at least, I don’t think it is - but she must get that a lot), set partly in the early 1200s and partly today. ... [Continue reading this entry]
