February 24, 2004And I Walked Into India
It was easy. I took a rickshaw to Lahore's train station from where I took a bus to the border. I got my passport stamped, my baggage searched, and was pointed in the direction of India. "Excuse me?" I asked the immigration officer. "Over there," he mumbled settling back into his seat and paper that I had interrupted him from. "India, over there. You must walk." Upon seeing my surprise he added, almost as an afterthought, "Not very far." Ok. So I put my backpack on and started walking. After a few minutes I saw a huge archway, and once closer, could make out "India" above it. Once I saw this word, the name of my destination, I couldn't help myself. I started running towards that arch, toward the letters that spelled India. I-N-D-I-A. I have done it. I crossed Europe to Asia. Greece to India. No planes. Just overland. Comments
