Canberra

Everyone tells you Canberra sucks. Even people who live there. But I chose to ignore them - I mean, what can be so bad about lots of parks and museums?

Well, you'd be surprised. The city is just like an enormous motorway rest stop: miles and miles of roads, few pavements, deserted streets and huge green areas full of nothing. It's a non-organic, purpose built city in the middle of nowhere, and I'm sure it looked good on paper but it just doesn't seem to work in reality. It's like having Milton Keynes as your capital.

I walked around for about three and a half hours and saw maybe four other pedestrians. I don't know where everyone was (at home with their fireworks, pot and porn? All of which are legal in Canberra, unlike the rest of the country) but the place was like a ghost town. I clambered over crash barriers and around patches of bush, and spent forever trying to get out of suburbia. But Canberra is surburbia. Just suburbia with embassies.

High points: a great pub with good live music and cold Coopers; the sunset on Parliament House and Lake Burley Griffin; a pretty cloud.

Low points: everything else. Sorry Canberra - I tried, I really did.
