Out of Africa

Namibia was definately my favorite African country - I didn't want to leave the dunes. I am sure I will be coming back to spend more time in Namibia some day. We had a brief stop at Fish River Canyon in southern Namibia, which was not that spectacular to me after having been out to the Grand Canyon a few times. Finally, after almost 8 weeks in Africa, we arrived in Cape Town - my final destination before heading to Australia

The one thing I really wanted to do in Cape Town was visit Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for almost 30 years. The intriguing thing about the Robben Island Tour is that the guides are ex prisoners from the Island, so they speak first hand about the way prisoners were treated! We took a taxi down to the waterfront to get on the 9am ferry to the Island but when we got there, all the ferries were cancelled for the day because the waters were too rough! Shoot! So instead, we took a cab to Canal Walk, which is a big mall in Cape Town, suppossedly the largest mall in the southern hemisphere. We had breakfast at the Mugg and Bean, and wandered around the mall for a bit. I tried again the next morning to get to Robbin Island but all the ferries were cancelled again. So no visit to Robben Island for me. Oh well, guess I'll have to stop into Cape Town again when I come back to Namibia. I did, however, finally get around to properly packaging my chairs from Malawi and posting them home. Look at the ridiculous number of stamps on the back.

So after a two hour flight from Cape Town to Johannesburg and an 11 hour flight from Johannesburg - I'm in Sydney! It's hard to believe that my time in Africa is over. I've booked myself into a really nice hotel in downtown Sydney for a few days, and I am trying to control the urge to eat everything in sight. I'll be meeting up with some friends I met back in 1998 during my semester abroad here at the University of New South Wales, and then probably some time next week I'll begin my trek up the coast!

Hey- Glad you made it to Australia safely and that you survived Africa with only a few mishaps (it could have been a lot worse than breaking scales and eating bugs- sounds like a Survivor episode). Enjoy your luxurious hotel in Sydney and keep up the blogs and pictures! Have fun!

What a great adventure - and you're only 1/3 of the way through (time wise, at least)! Those dune pictures are incredible. What was the deal with all of those stamps?

I am so glad you enjoyed Africa. I haven't been able to look at the site for awhile so I will spend a little time this evening catching up (really want to read about Kilimanjaro). Anyway, I'm sure you will have a great time in Australia. I think we were going to miss each other in Peru but just in case - I will be in Lima on Sept 25th at the Kamano's Hotel.
take care!
