Transit of Venus

All of the time zones in the world are based off of GMT, Greenwich Mean Time, and tuesday morning I was standing on the actual Prime Meridian, with one leg in the western hemisphere and one leg in the eastern hemisphere. Of course, I had to take the obligatory cheezy picture of this.

When Karen and I went to Greenwich Park last night, there was some commotion going on at the Observatory - camera crews setting up, media blockades. When we got back, she looked up on the internet and found out that the "Transit of Venus" was going to be happening today, and that the Royal Observatory was making a show of it. I had planned to visit the museum today anyway, so I just went up a bit earlier to see what all the fuss was about.

When I got there, there were people all over the place setting up telescopes - all kinds of telescopes, homemade ones in cardboard boxes, or big ones that people were standing in line to look through. and most people were also looking through little glasses given out by the observatory

I guess the Transit of Venus hasn't happened since 1882, and this is the first time anyone has actually seen it. I got my pair of glasses and saw the little dot on the sun. Neat-o.

"Cheezy picture" huh? Maybe in Michelle's World. But for us never-left-North America folks, it's pretty freakin' cool. Glad you arrived safely at destination #1 and are having a good time. Very awesome and interesting photos - keep 'em comin'!

People are so tiny in the "Royal Observatory" picture, and the scenery is so beautiful. You took the picture by yourself? Or you download it from some website. Glad to hear from you.

Hey Rob! Glad you like the photos. I saw a car just like yours today and it made me think of you. I was going to take a picture, but didn't think the driver would appreciate that.

TONY: Yes, all the pictures I've uploaded I took myself. Check out the one of me in the plate. I like that one.

Sorry, Michelle, I checked out your site without permission. I am a Lonely Planet regular, now I guess I become one of your travelling fans.

All that and you didn't get a picture of the transit? Too bad. I really wanted to see it, but we were not fortunate enough to be on the right part of the globe. The observatory is way cool though.

Didn't get to see the Transit of Venus when I was in Greenwich. Did get to shake hands with Prince Charles. Not sure which was the better draw. I think you win. Love the site and the pics.

ED: Nope didn't get a pic of the transit. If i had waited in that massive line i could have gotten one through my digital camera. didn't want to wait. i can draw it for you when i get home.
